The child welfare system mimics the criminal justice system in many ways- “predictive analytics “ is one of the ways.

When you create a tool measuring risk based on history of children and families- you bring in past racism and bias into present day technology.

The same results will occur if bias isnt attuned to.

Happy to see that ACLU is taking this on.

Child welfare agencies across the country are turning to predictive analytics, but few families know they are subject to them.

Why do we center Blackness!? The experience of Black people in the United States of America has been codified by way of colonization and present day systems, to include child welfare. Our culture & traditions are unique. Race is still a determinant of outcomes. Our stories must be told. What is your why?

When I worked as a child welfare worker & was tasked w/removing children from families, images like this were constant in my mind when going into black & brown communities. It was a feeling I was never able to shake. I could have done more harm than good. Can you relate? How did you reconcile this reality?

This👏🏾is👏🏾spot on! I would add that as the system shifts to meeting the demand to address disparity and disproportionatality - the shift to policy advocacy for all the social conditions that Black & Brown families face must occur as well.

As the article highlights..public, private and community must work in partnership.

When I have confronted child welfare leaders with this reality, I am often met with the response/thought that these social problems are too big to address.

Are child welfare professionals positioned to work alongside advocates in the space of affordable & fair housing, income/living wage equality, education?

If so, in what ways has this shown up?

If not, what would it take?

Does the private nature of child welfare hinder collaboration?

This bill attempts to give African American children and families the same protections as the Indian Child Welfare Act gives to Indigenous children and families; it is ruled unconstitutional as the law can’t give special provisions to race. The designation of race continues to be harmful to African Americans and is used to further inequities. Thoughts?

A bill defending Black families against racist practices in the child welfare system has failed to pass for a third time in the Minnesota Legislature.
