Today, we pause to remember September 11, 2001 — a day that changed our nation forever.

We remember the 2,977 innocent lives lost, the families forever changed, and the brave first responders, firefighters, law enforcement officers, military members, and ordinary citizens who showed extraordinary courage and selflessness.

Twenty-five years later, their stories live on. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Georgia Voters:
You’ll See a 9-1-1 Question on the November Ballot
This November, Georgia voters will have the opportunity to vote on a proposed constitutional amendment related to the future of 9-1-1 funding in our state.

Georgia House Resolution 1243 (HR 1243) would authorize the Georgia General Assembly to create a dedicated Georgia Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG911) Fund.
So, what does that actually mean?

First, an important point:
👉 This amendment does NOT increase the current 9-1-1 fee. The current fee remains $1.50 per month.
If approved by voters, the amendment would allow Georgia to establish a non-lapsing fund dedicated specifically to 9-1-1. Money placed into that fund could only be used for 9-1-1 purposes and would remain available from year to year rather than expiring at the end of a budget cycle.

The fund could support things such as:
📡 9-1-1 infrastructure and system upgrades
☎️ 9-1-1 operations and facilities
👥 9-1-1 workforce support
💻 Georgia’s transition to Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG911)

NG911 is an important part of modernizing emergency communications and ensuring Georgia’s 9-1-1 centers have the technology, infrastructure, and resources necessary to serve their communities now and in the future. There are still details that would come later. HR 1243 itself does not determine how the fund will be managed or what money will ultimately be deposited into it. Those decisions would require future legislation.

Georgia voters will make the decision on this constitutional amendment in the November 2026 General Election.
We encourage everyone to learn about the measure before Election Day. The attached one-page guide from the Georgia Emergency Communications Authority (GECA) provides a quick overview of what HR 1243 would — and would not — do.

Before calling 911:
✅ Know your exact address or location whenever possible.
✅ Look for nearby landmarks, cross streets, business names, or mile markers.
✅ Don’t assume your cell phone gives us your exact location—it may not.
✅ Consider downloading the what3words app to help identify your precise location in an emergency.

Every second counts, and knowing your location can help us get the right responders to you faster.

We wore 💚to raise awareness for mental health. Our 911 Chaplain, Michelle Rhodes wanted to show support during Mental Health Awareness Month. Covington-Newton County 9-1-1 and City of Covington, GA - Government participated. Thank you for your support. 💚

At the May 18, 2026 City Council meeting, the Civility Task Force and Mayor Fleeta Baggett presented their March 2026 Civility Award to Covington-Newton County 9-1-1 team member Tyler Silvey. The Civility Award recognizes employees who exemplify respect, kindness, professionalism, and a strong commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive work environment. Nominations are submitted by fellow employees.

Tyler was nominated for being an "outstanding employee who always seeks to give 110% to his job." Not only is Tyler active in recruitment and community outreach for the Covington-Newton County 911 team, he often volunteers without being asked including, most recently, at the Emergency Operations Center during the 2026 winter storms. Tyler handles very intense and challenging calls as a telecommunicator assigned to the Newton County Sheriff's Office, but remains a great resource for his peers, often stepping up to lead and assist before anyone asks for help. Having recently earned his APCO Communications Training Officer (CTO) certification, Tyler is set to mentor his first trainee next month therefore passing along his high standards to the next generation of dispatchers.

Congratulations, Tyler, and thank you for your positive attitude and dedication to your job as a . We are grateful that you are a member of the City of Covington family and the community's 911 team!
