A mother in Milpitas stretching groceries until the end of the month. A teenager looking for a mentor and a place to belong. A senior who has put off a health check-up for too long. A family rebuilding after a fire or flood.

For them, help shouldn’t be hard to find.

On October 11, Sewa International Bay Area opened the doors to a new, larger Community Center in Milpitas, a place where neighbors can find food support, health services, learning and youth programs, and a hand to hold when disaster strikes.

More space means more families served, more volunteers welcomed, and more partners working together under one roof. Alongside the Mayors of Cupertino, Milpitas and Sunnyvale and partners including AAPI, Bay Area Community Health and the Saloni Heart Foundation, we celebrated what this center really is: a home for the whole community.

As Sunnyvale Mayor Larry Klein put it, the center is “a dedicated hub for selfless service, community engagement and civic programs… bringing people together to create a lasting positive impact.”

📍 691 S. Milpitas Blvd, Suite 100 (Milpitas Tech Center / FalconX Building)

Our doors are open. Stop by, volunteer, or tell a neighbor who could use support.

What inspires someone to serve when no one is watching?
Our latest blog explores Nishkāma Karma—the timeless principle of serving without expecting personal reward—and how it inspires volunteers to put community before self. Because the true measure of service is not who notices, but whose life is touched.

From Chennai to Chicago and Nairobi to New York, communities face a common challenge. Despite being more connected than ever, many people feel less connected to a larger sense of purpose and belonging.

Nepal Flood Relief: Help 300 Students Continue Their Education

When devastating floods swept through Nepal, they washed away the bridge across the Trishuli River in Devighat, Nuwakot. Students living across the river now depend on a temporary ropeway to reach Sanskrit Secondary School, facing daily uncertainty and serious safety risks.

In this on-the-ground report, Sewa International USA President Srikanth Gundavarapu highlights their challenges.

Sewa International USA is stepping forward to support a residential facility near the school for 300 students for 5–6 months, until the bridge is rebuilt, so they can continue learning without crossing the river each day.

Help keep 300 students’ dreams alive. Your contribution can give them a safer path to education during this difficult time.

Houston Comes Together to Stand with Nepal 🇳🇵

Three community-led fundraisers across Greater Houston by the Sewa International USA - Houston Chapter. One shared purpose — standing with families affected by the devastating floods in Nepal.

Together, these efforts raised more than $32,000 for Sewa International’s Nepal Flood Relief & Rehabilitation efforts, showing how a community can turn compassion into meaningful action.

🎶 Sargam Melodies, in partnership with Bharathi Kalai Manram and Shri Krishna Vrundavana, brought the community together for an evening of music and dinner. Performances in Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, Tamil and Malayalam helped raise $12,000+ for Nepal relief. The contribution was received by Bharat Patel, Sewa Houston’s Case Manager.

🙏 Bhajagovindam at Sri Meenakshi Temple, Pearland brought together more than 100 attendees, followed by the presentation of a $10,000 contribution toward Nepal relief. Tarvinder Taneja, Sewa’s Community Resilience Manager, shared updates on Sewa’s ongoing work on the ground in Nepal.

🍽️ “Brunch for a Cause” brought families, children, volunteers and local businesses together to raise funds and prepare hundreds of meals. The fundraiser surpassed its $10,000 goal, with 100% of proceeds supporting Nepal Flood Relief. From preparing idlis, vadas, chutneys, sambar, sweets and other meals to coordinating pickups, deliveries and last-minute logistics, the entire community came together to make the day possible.

The support goes beyond immediate relief. As affected communities in Nepal move toward recovery, rehabilitation and rebuilding, Sewa International continues to support families on the ground.

Thousands of miles away, Houstonians are standing with Nepal — turning compassion into action and community into hope. ❤️🇳🇵

🥕 Sewa Food Drives | Austin

Another productive Saturday of service in Austin! 💚

Sewa International USA - Austin Chapter volunteers helped package freeze-dried bananas and load trays of fresh vegetables into the freeze dryer, helping make nutritious food available to families in the community.

The effort was made possible with a generous harvest of vegetables from Farmshare Austin. Through Sewa Food Drives, we continue to work with community partners and volunteers to strengthen food access and support families.

Two days in Nepal. Over 125 miles through flood-affected communities. And a level of devastation that is difficult to comprehend from thousands of miles away.

Sewa International USA’s President Srikanth Gundvarapu ji recently spent two days in Nepal to understand firsthand the impact of the devastating floods, meet affected families and relief teams, and assess how Sewa can best support both immediate relief and the longer journey of recovery. The visit began with discussions in Kathmandu with officials and local response leaders about rescue, recovery and the immense challenges facing affected communities. The following morning, the Sewa team left Kathmandu at 7:30 AM and returned after 10 PM after traveling through difficult, mud-covered roads to Nuwakot, Betravati and Devikot.

What he saw was heartbreaking. Homes had been washed away. Roads and bridges had disappeared. In some areas, mud, silt and rocks had piled up against buildings several stories high. The force of the floodwaters had reshaped parts of the landscape itself.

At Betravati and Devikot, sacred temples near river confluences were washed away. In communities where rivers divide towns, the destruction of bridges has separated families and made it difficult for children to reach their schools. Temporary zip-line crossings are being used in some areas until connectivity can be restored.

But the most powerful part of the visit was not the physical destruction. It was meeting the people living through it. Sewa team met families still searching for loved ones. They met children who had lost parents and siblings. One young child staying at a hostel had lost both an older brother and sister in the floods. They met a school principal responsible for nearly 800 students whose own home had been washed away — yet she continues to care for and support her students.

After witnessing the devastation firsthand, Sewa International’s President reflected: “Having come here gives me a much greater appreciation of what Sewa is doing on the ground.”

Sewa volunteers and partner organizations have been engaged in the response from the beginning. Today, immediate relief remains important.

The next phase will be about rehabilitation and rebuilding lives — supporting vulnerable and orphaned children, restoring access to education, providing hostel facilities where needed, helping people develop skills and livelihoods, and supporting communities as they begin rebuilding.

For those of us in the United States, it is difficult to fully understand the scale of a disaster like this until we see the people, families and communities behind the images.

Your support can help Sewa continue serving families. Today while preparing for the long road to recovery. Please donate to Sewa International’s Nepal Flood Relief and Rehabilitation efforts. Every contribution can help a family, a child or a community take another step toward rebuilding. Donate. Share. Stand with Nepal.
