Black History Month Spotlight | Mr. Charlie Tomlinson - Henry County's First Black Deputy

This Black History Month, we proudly honor Mr. Charlie Tomlinson, who is widely recognized as Henry County’s first African American Deputy.

Mr. Tomlinson is remembered for breaking barriers in local law enforcement, helping pave the way for future generations of deputies and strengthening representation within our profession. His courage and commitment to service remain an important part of the legacy of the Henry County Sheriff’s Office and our community.

His dedication to Henry County extended far beyond the badge. Mr. Tomlinson later served as Henry County’s Code Enforcement Director and contributed his leadership to the McDonough Housing Authority, the Henry County Board of Public Health, and the Henry County Council on Aging — helping improve the quality of life for countless residents.

A man of faith and service, his legacy reflects resilience, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to community.

We honor Mr. Tomlinson’s lasting contributions and celebrate the path he helped pave for those who serve today.

The NAACP Henry County Branch invites the community to join in honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the 2026 MLK Weekend Celebration. This year’s theme — “Mission Possible II: Building Community, Uniting a Nation the Nonviolent Way” — calls everyone to continue Dr. King’s mission through unity, service, and peace.

The weekend begins with the MLK Prayer Breakfast on Saturday, January 17, 2026, from 9:00 AM–11:00 AM at Mt. Olive Baptist Church. Guests will enjoy a morning of reflection, fellowship, and music. Registration is $10 per person.

The celebration continues with the MLK Peace March & Parade on Monday, January 19, 2026, at the Henry County Performing Arts Center. Lineup starts at 9:00 AM, with the parade kicking off at 10:00 AM. Immediately following, the Community Youth Program will feature youth-led reflections, performances, and a special skit inspired by this year’s theme.

All attendees are encouraged to bring canned goods to both events to help replenish local Henry County food banks.

For updates and details, visit henrycountyganaacp.org and follow the NAACP Henry County Branch on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram.

Join the community in celebrating Dr. King’s legacy and continuing the mission of building unity the nonviolent way.
