Held our final Council meeting of the year (and the term) yesterday. Thought I’d pen an update on recent happenings at City Hall and around Atlanta.
On the policy front, am proud to have authored or helped craft several pieces of legislation over the last few months, including:
* A $100 million housing opportunity bond, the largest investment in affordable housing that the City has ever made.
* Updating building impact fees for the first time in 27 years, generating millions of new dollars a year for transportation infrastructure, green space expansion, and public safety facilities.
* Developing a funding stream to complete construction of the Atlanta BeltLine's full 22-mile trail loop by 2030.
* Creation of an affordable housing trust fund and recurring funding stream, to be refilled every year with $14+ million.
* Creation of a Community Park Fund, with an initial $2 million City allocation matched by the philanthropic community.
* Adoption of the FY22 Budget that included the final set of raises for our public safety officers and set aside dollars to fill critical public safety vacancies.
* Adoption of a project list, that will go before Atlanta voters in May 2022, for $750 million in improvements to transportation infrastructure, public safety facilities, and parks, green space, trails, recreation centers and outdoor pools. While too comprehensive to list here, the proposed investments are well balanced geographically and focus on needed renovations and thoughtful new projects. More on that in the weeks ahead.
I’ve been grateful to serve this year and this term— and am excited for the work ahead starting January 3 with Mayor Dickens and new City Council.
Have a safe and happy holiday season!
