Our officers enjoy events like this—they provide a fun and meaningful opportunity to connect with students while supporting an important cause. We are proud of their willingness to get involved and make a positive impact in our schools!

Our school district is increasing safety for students and bus drivers by installing cameras on school bus stop-arms. Our team of 450 dedicated bus drivers drive 27,500 miles a day to transport students to and from school throughout the county. Our bus drivers exceed state requirements for training and the transportation maintenance team holds the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Blue Seal of Excellence – a combination that illustrates our commitment to student safety aboard buses. Beginning this month, we're taking another step to advance student rider and bus driver safety. All school buses now will be equipped with the cameras to identify drivers who illegally pass buses that are stopped and actively loading or unloading students.

A 30-day warning period begins March 30, 2026; during this period, drivers who illegally pass a stopped school bus will receive a warning notice by mail with no financial penalty. Beginning May 4, 2026, drivers who illegally pass a stopped school bus will be issued a $1,000 citation by mail.

The installation of these cameras was prompted by a rising rate of incidents. Our Transportation department conducts an annual audit during which all our bus drivers on the same day record how many drivers illegally pass their stopped bus while students are loading and unloading. During last school year’s audit, 262 drivers illegally passed our bus drivers in one day.

This morning, Cherokee County School District was proud to host our monthly School Safety & Security Networking Group at Woodstock High School, bringing together safety leaders from across metro Atlanta and our public safety partners.

Representatives from multiple school districts and agencies including, Fulton, Atlanta, Cobb, Marietta, Paulding, Dawson, Alpharetta PD, GEMA/HS, AFCEMA, and the Georgia Department of Education, came together to collaborate, share best practices, and strengthen our collective approach to school safety.

A key focus of today’s meeting was the Ready Georgia Seal of Preparedness, presented by Mark Muma with the Georgia Department of Education (GADoE). The discussion centered on how schools and districts can enhance emergency preparedness, align with state standards, and build safer learning environments through comprehensive planning and coordination.
These partnerships and conversations are critical. When we work together, we ensure that our schools are not only prepared, but resilient.

Today, the district celebrated the Support Staff Employees of the Year, and we are proud to recognize two outstanding members from our team:

Randy Streetman, Security Support Specialist, received the award for our department and Officer Tyler Thomas receiving the award for River Ridge High School.

Both were honored for their dedication, professionalism, and the positive impact they make every day. We truly appreciate their hard work and commitment to keeping our schools and community safe. Congratulations to you both on this well-deserved recognition!

Wildcat to Wolverine Club!!

This club is designed to help young boys grow into respectful, responsible, and confident young men. Through intentional lessons and discussions, they focus on leadership, respect for others, kindness, accountability, and making positive choices both in and out of school.

WES invites strong role models from the community to talk with the students and reinforce these values through real-life experiences. When our department was invited to speak, we couldn't have chosen a better person for the job than Ofc. Mark Hand.
