Theology matters, yes.
Theology is the study of God, and without studying God, we can’t really know Him, true.
Theology is vital to the life of the church, absolutely.

But friends, theology is not ever to be used as a weapon. Ever.

Not as a means to be prideful in how we assess those who lack “good” theology.
Not as a means to pig out on information in the left side of our brain, while our left and right ventricles suffer from lovelessness.
Not as a means to exalt our “camp” or doctrine or tribes that can easily become an echo chamber if we don’t diversify our palette.

Theology is always supposed to be a means to glorify God and love our neighbors better.

If we believe that, we will refrain from:

• Attacking people in comment sections who we have no relationship with (even though we feel we are right).
• Storing up the acquisition of our knowledge without any action plans to let it change us.
• Being quick to speak, quick to anger, and slow to listen.

Unity ≠ uniformity. Let us stand together on essentials. Be humble with what we know. And remember that when we get to Heaven, we’ll finally realize how much grace we actually needed when we inwardly thought we had it all figured out. Positions change and people grow.

Let’s grow together.

There will never be a time in our pursuit of God where we have either learned “too” much or walked out our faith “enough” through application. God’s Word is meant to be devoured and exercised.⁣

We can reach dangerous lows when we begin to believe that we’ve maxed out on our intimacy with God. There is no such thing in God’s economy as spending too much time with Him or walking out the Christian life with too much fervor.⁣

The headlines are there. We’ve seen the examples. The stagnant have proved what can happen when we become so puffed up that what’s in our heads, has no bearing on our lives. We’ve also seen what can happen when we grow stale in our character because we haven’t paired it with the knowledge of what is required of us to live the abundant life.⁣

Keep pursuing God. He desires for you to know Him deep and wide. Then, take that knowledge and go love the heck out of your neighbor(s) and glorify Him in all that you do.⁣

Look to Jesus’ example in The Scriptures, He modeled perfectly what it looks like to do both knowledge and application, well.

When a child is upset, afraid or confused, they will cling tightly to their parent(s) because they believe them to be able to calm them, nurture them and protect them from harm. They are familiar.

God was onto something when He admonished Believers in the New Testament, to be like little children.

When faced with hardship, a challenging decision, or fear, what is it that you cling to?

・Is it the mindless scrolling that we're all so guilty of?
・Is it allowing those unguarded thoughts to run rampant in your mind, because it feels like it takes too much work to take them captive?
・Is it sleeping, drinking or turning to a vice you once laid at the feet of Jesus?

God doesn't just tell the people of Israel to cling to Him throughout the Old Testament because He had plans to abandon them. He tells them to cling to Him because He knows that within Himself, is the only true refuge from the fleeting pursuits of the world.

Commit to familiarizing yourself with God's character, so that He will be your first reach in your time of lack and abundance.

"You shall follow the Lord your God and fear Him; and you shall keep His commandments, listen to His voice, serve Him, and cling to Him." | Deuteronomy 13:4, NASB

The words we read online may be:

Kind.
Important.
Helpful.
Viral.
Shaming.
Inconsistent.
Humbling.
Polarizing.
Valuable.

However, all of these words pale in comparison to God's Word. Spending time reading these little squares is okay. But spending most of your time in The Scriptures is even better.

There, is where you will get your best view of God.

"Lord, your word is forever;
it is firmly fixed in heaven." | Psalm 119:89, CSB

Let’s be honest…

There are some conversations we have with our friends, families and/or husband that need some context to them. If someone were to take a screenshot of a private conversation you had and publish it online with a witty caption to follow, you would want everyone to understand exactly what you meant. It’s understood that certain things do and do not apply given a particular circumstance. And God’s Word is no different.

Sometimes it’s difficult to think of the original audience in The Bible passages we’re reading because we’re so far removed from that time period and culture. Certain references the New Testament readers would’ve understood perfectly because they were well acquainted with The Old Testament Scriptures. Reading Hebrews would’ve automatically sparked a hearer’s knowledge of Leviticus references. Hearing of Christ being likened unto a lamb, would’ve hit the audiences who were knowledgeable about sacrifices a little differently than us.

Keeping God’s Word in context is becoming such a lost practice. But it doesn’t have to stay that way. God gives us practical depictions of what context can do to help a reader gain understanding and wisdom that only He can provide. And sometimes He uses our little text threads and colloquialisms to remind us that there is value in knowing one’s history, culture, society and the like, to better understand the voice (or author) that is representing it. So, let’s commit to honoring the voice of the thread we’re reading out of. They have something valuable to say, but let’s take the time to unearth it through careful reading and studying. This will bless our interpretive efforts.

Online ministries are great! They allow for and can provide instant access to Biblical teaching, Gospel-centered posts and quick devotional style posts that can uplift one’s day! They allow us to connect with women from all over the world, even if that means time zones vary. It’s instant. It’s convenient. It works.

And, just as easily as we can be connected to the good side of the online world, we can instantly experience the not so helpful or healthy sides of it to. Viral sermons with no commitment to context, become the most popular reposts on your timeline. Learning to discern between truth and error can get trickier, because the photo the caption has looks amazing, yet the content is off in some way. Irregardless of our experience(s) with the online world, one truth remains: Online communities, sites and posts, are not substitutes for the local church.

Too often, we can fall for the trap of using “good” things, as replacements for the better thing. Just like vitamin supplements, outside resources are there to supplement what we get in tangible, local, God-ordained community, not to replace it. Vitamins only help, as far as one is consuming what the vitamins were created to supplement one’s daily diet.

Our adversary wants nothing more than for you to run to social media to confess sin, rely on Facebook groups for community and be present online but inactive and distant from local accountability and faith family that can do what virtual entities cannot. The book of Acts is a great picture in Scripture, to see what God’s intentions are for His Church. Where He has provided local accountability through church government, sound teaching through Biblical education, and so many opportunities for fellowship and prayer, we must take advantage of it. Online connection is great, but it can’t replace or touch the great gift God has given in the local church Body.

Listen. In this influencer shaped social media scene, the temptation to search and post, is real. We want to share encouraging bits and uplifting posts with our social media friends and loved ones, and that’s such a good desire and aim! But, sometimes, we can do that at the expense of only going to Scripture, to pick out Instagram “noteworthy” quotes, severed from context and right application.

A Facebook friend needs some encouraging while expressing that they’re having a hard day? Jeremiah 29:11 seems like the PERFECT verse to post in their comments section…until we read the actual context and realize that “you” that is being spoken of, isn’t your Facebook friend, but instead is a prophecy, God is giving to exiles! Mightttt not be a great idea after reading the first verse of chapter 29, eh?

Social media is an awesome place to share things about God and The Bible. But not at the expense of cherry picking verses without understanding the context, first. As we communicate often here, all of Scripture is about God first. Let us allow that to drive our social media shares, even if it’s unpopular or inconvenient at times, to do so.

One of the worst ways we can listen to a friend, tell us about themselves, is by interrupting every 5 minutes, to redirect the conversation back to us. Have you ever had that happen to you? In the moment where you share some of your most intimate struggles or good news, they hijacked the conversation and made it about themselves? Well, if we’re not careful, we’ll do this to God, as we read HIS Word.

The Bible is a book about God, first. This isn’t a fancy cliche or Christian colloquialism. It’s what Jesus was communicating to those on the road to Emmaus in Luke 24. It’s the big picture that Jesus, and the rest of the triune Godhead squad, want us to understand. That if we want to understand and read Scripture rightly, we’ve gotta stop, look at what’s written, listen to what God is communicating about Himself, through the authors, from the perspective of the original audience.

This fix, in perspective can change your whole outlook on The Bible. What you once approached as a story or list of personalized verses about yourself and your “destiny”, can be changed into a new outlook on asking the most important question of a Bible reader’s journey: What does this teach me about The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit! If we desire to understand how The Bible fits together, we must understand and look for traces and evidences of The One who authored it!

07/27/2018

The word, "oops" has never proceeded from the mouth or mind of God. Why? Because everything He does is calculated and intentional. He's never caught off guard or lacking in knowledge. Think on these things, as you journey throughout your day. He never misses His intended target. You can trust in His ability to hit the nail on its head, every single time.
