Theology matters, yes.
Theology is the study of God, and without studying God, we can’t really know Him, true.
Theology is vital to the life of the church, absolutely.
But friends, theology is not ever to be used as a weapon. Ever.
Not as a means to be prideful in how we assess those who lack “good” theology.
Not as a means to pig out on information in the left side of our brain, while our left and right ventricles suffer from lovelessness.
Not as a means to exalt our “camp” or doctrine or tribes that can easily become an echo chamber if we don’t diversify our palette.
Theology is always supposed to be a means to glorify God and love our neighbors better.
If we believe that, we will refrain from:
• Attacking people in comment sections who we have no relationship with (even though we feel we are right).
• Storing up the acquisition of our knowledge without any action plans to let it change us.
• Being quick to speak, quick to anger, and slow to listen.
Unity ≠ uniformity. Let us stand together on essentials. Be humble with what we know. And remember that when we get to Heaven, we’ll finally realize how much grace we actually needed when we inwardly thought we had it all figured out. Positions change and people grow.
Let’s grow together.
