My name is Adrienne Ferguson and I was diagnosed with Hydrocephalus (Water on the Brain) when I was six (6) years old. I had to spend months in the hospital. There were times when I had to stay in my bed, because I was too sick to get up but I wanted to play with the other children so bad. I was in the hospital three (3) times as a child getting my shunt replaced and this past April 8, 2014, I had
to have emergency surgery and my shunt had to be replaced again. While I was at home recovering, I came up with the idea to make dolls for children who were just like me and this is when "A Friend Like Me™" was born. A Friend Like Me™ is a company that will be manufacturing dolls but just not any dolls. Our mission is to manufacture dolls for children who are sick, who have a disability or going through an illness. Often times these children are going through their illnesses or disabilities feeling all alone and without someone to understand or relate to their situation. We at "A Friend Like Me™" want to bring comfort and companionship to these children by providing them with dolls who look just like them so that they will not feel alone. We want to make dolls for every illness, for every disorder and for all nationalities. We would like to cover everything from Cancer, Leukemia, Hydrocephalus, HIV, Autism, Lupus, Sickle Cell Anemia, Dwarfism, Down Syndrome, Cleft Lip, Stuttering, etc. There is nothing we cannot cover, we would not turn anyone away because I know how it feels to feel different or all alone. Each doll will have an inspirational t-shirt made especially for them and the child will have that same t-shirt to wear along with their new friend. If the child is in the hospital, their new friend will have on the same hospital gown.
