As many Americans spend today with family, friends, and moments of rest, we ask that you also take time to remember the men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation.

Memorial Day is more than the unofficial start of summer. It is a solemn reminder that freedom carries a cost, paid by those who never made it home.

Today, the 36th Infantry Division honors the fallen, remembers their sacrifice, and stands alongside the families and loved ones who carry their memory forward every day.

This past week in Cassino, Italy, community members gathered to remember the sacrifice of the 36th Infantry Division along the Rapido, also known as the Gari River.

On May 17, a wreath was laid at the 36th Infantry Division Monument, followed by a march to the banks of the river where so many T-Patch Soldiers fought and fell during World War II.

For the Soldiers, veterans and families of the 36th Infantry Division, moments like this mean a great deal. We are deeply thankful to the Cassino community, local historians, and friends of the Division, including Michele Di Lonardo, whose dedication over the years has helped keep this history alive.

More than 80 years later, their sacrifice has not been forgotten. The bond between the T-Patch Division and the people of Italy remains strong. In Spite of Hell.

Soldiers assigned to the 36th Infantry Division recently took on the 1,000 lbs. Club Weightlifting Challenge, testing their strength, endurance, and determination through a three-event competition consisting of the bench press, barbell back squat, and dead lift. Participants must complete lifts totaling 1,000 lbs. for males or 500 lbs. for females to earn membership into the club.

1st Lt. Taziamoma Abraham, who helped organize the event, said the challenge was designed to give Soldiers an opportunity to push themselves both mentally and physically while building morale across the formation.

To date, fourteen 36 ID Soldiers have risen to the challenge and earned their place in the 1,000 lbs. Club.
