#OTD in 1943, prisoners in Sobibor killed 11 SS guards and police auxiliaries and set the camp on fire. About 300 prisoners escaped, breaking through the barbed wire and risking their lives in the minefield surrounding the camp. Over 100 were recaptured and later shot.

Johann Niemann joined the Nazi Party at age 18. He was not only a true believer in Nazi racist ideology, but also an opportunist seeking to rise above his humble origins.

Join United States Holocaust Memorial Museum on the anniversary of the prisoner uprising at Sobibor, tomorrow at 8:30 AM CDT, to learn how an “ordinary German” so quickly became a professional killer and died at the hands of those he sought to obliterate.

#OTD in 1941, this child, along with other Jews from Kyiv, was murdered in a ravine known as Babyn Yar (Babi Yar). The Jews were marched to the ravine, forced to hand over any valuables in their possession, to take off all their clothes, and to advance in groups towards the ravine edge. When they reached the edge, they were gunned down by automatic fire. At the end of the day, the bodies were covered by a thin layer of soil. In two days of shooting, 33,771 Jews were murdered.

It is important to note that Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement and holiest day of the Jewish year, began 30 September 1941. Arranging the mass executions of the Jews on the days of Soviet or Jewish holidays was a frequent occurrence and had symbolic meaning of triumph for the Germans.

Thank you for posting the video of Curtis K Owen. He was my grandfather. I came across your video this evening. Thank you for the work you do and for including my grandfather in your oral history. Curtis Owen passed away this morning, just 4 days shy of his 101st birthday.

I just visited the THGC website and looked at the overview of genocides, and noticed that it does not include the genocide of indigenous populations in Texas and other US states. Why not?
Hello, Our website for our documentary, the Presence of Their Absence, is up! The film follows Fred Zaidman, a Los Angeles son of Holocaust survivors, on a journey to trace his “inherited trauma”. Is this commission set up for the Jewish holocaust that happened during WW2 or for the genocide that occurred to natives because of the intrusion of the Spaniards and those who followed?
