This afternoon was a very special one for the Texas Holocaust and Genocide Commission! Today at the BBYO International Convention 2020, three #Texas men who were present at the #liberation of #Nazi concentration and death camps were honored for their #courage and service during #WorldWarII.

In May 2019, the Texas Holocaust and Genocide Commission (with the generous donation from the Friends of the THGC and former #THGC Commissioner Dr. Anna Steinberger) awarded Mr. Marco Franco of United High School in United Independent School District the 3rd Annual Dr. Anna Steinberger Outstanding Educator Award of $1,000. This cash prize went directly to Mr. Franco.

The 4th Annual Steinberger Award application is available and due by 4:00PM on Thursday, February 27, 2020. This award is open to 6-12 grade teachers, librarians, and curriculum specialists demonstrating excellence in teaching the Holocaust and/or genocides.

T O N I G H T, February 13th at 7:00 p.m., one of the world’s leading experts on the Holocaust, Dr. Omer Bartov, will speak about the anatomy of a genocide. He will expand upon the idea that ethnic cleansing most often happens slowly and is perpetrated not by sociopaths, but by friends and neighbors.

A portion of The Texas Liberator: Witness to the Holocaust traveling exhibit will also be on display throughout the conference. Texas Holocaust and Genocide Commission Director of Education Dr. J.E. Wolfson enjoyed catching up with former Commissioner Gregg Philipson and wife Michelle. The Philipsons continue to exhibit Holocaust artifacts and artwork from their personal collection in several museums. The #THGC has arranged to scan, photograph, and digitize hundreds of their items as The Gregg and Michelle Philipson Collection and Archive, which may be viewed for free and printed for classroom use at http://thgc.texas.gov/projects/philipson-collection.
