Austin’s FY 2026–27 budget is final… and community pressure made a difference.

We helped maintain social service contract funding for another year, secured funding for the new Joint Emergency Communications (JEC) Office, and protected critical investments in housing and supportive services.

But the work isn’t finished. APD’s budget continues to grow, essential community needs remain underfunded, and we’ll keep pushing until all 911 call takers are moved out of APD and into the new JEC office.

A huge shoutout to the Community Investment Budget Coalition and every community member who showed up, spoke out, organized, and kept the pressure on throughout this budget process. These wins belong to the community.

And thank you to Council Members Krista Laine, Mike Siegel, José Velásquez, Ryan Alter, Zo Qadri, and Vanessa Fuentes for supporting community-centered investments during this budget cycle.

Budgets are moral documents. They show us what, and who, our city chooses to prioritize.

We’ll celebrate the progress, stay clear-eyed about what remains, and keep organizing for a just, safe, thriving Austin.

🚨 Texas’ THC rules have changed. Here’s what you need to know.

As of July 31, 2026, Texas reinstated rules that classify many manufactured THC products—including Delta-8, Delta-10, THCP, and other similar cannabinoids—as Schedule I controlled substances.

But here’s what’s important:
➡️ Not every THC product is illegal. Compliant hemp-derived Delta-9 products (at or below 0.3% by dry weight) remain legal under current law.
➡️ The legal landscape is complicated. Questions remain about enforcement, testing, and how these new rules will be applied in practice.
➡️ The consequences can be severe. APD has stated that possession of Delta-8 could be treated as a state jail felony, while small amounts of ma*****na are generally still handled differently under Austin’s local policies.

This is exactly why clear laws matter.
People should not have to guess whether something purchased legally yesterday could expose them to felony charges today.
At Austin Justice Coalition, we believe Texas should prioritize:
✅ Public health over criminalization
✅ Accurate labeling and independent testing
✅ Adult-only sales
✅ Education and harm reduction
❌ Not another pipeline to arrest, jail, and debt.

A child should still be alive. Instead of investing in the communities that need support most, the city is proposing a $25 MILLION increase to the APD budget. $11.4 million of that is just contract raises, while social services are being cut to address a $24 million budget deficit. We demand: transparent investigation, accountability for every officer responsible, and investment in non-police crisis response.

Keep the budget flat!
