š Updated information on trying to save The First Company Governor's Horse Guards in Avon CT:
Avon property owners pay approximately $100M in CT State Income Taxes per year, yet less than 5% of that comes back to benefit Avonā¦while many other Towns get higher percentages back, & some Cities get over 100% of what they pay in State Income Taxes.
The State isnāt reducing our State budget/taxes by this $330K Horse Guards amount, theyāre increasing spending in other Towns/Cities & in other State spending by a lot, when some of that increased spending could be used to increase the CT National Guard/State Organized Militia Fund as needed.
Based on the Horse Guards Bill HB6440 from earlier this year, & the Housing Bill HB5002 from this week, if the State continues its increasing pressure against local zoning power over housing & land-use, & if this Horse Guards land in Avon is turned into housing where more families & children will be suddenly added to Avon, it could cost all current Avon property owners more in needed extra police, fire, emergency medical, & school services than the potential increased tax revenue collected from those new property owners, especially if these include tax abatements.
This could make Avon unaffordable for some current Avon citizens. Itās also a quality-of-life issue, of more congestion/crowding of cars/people, & of less open space. The State is heading towards āputing the cart before the horses/landā, by not telling us its plans for the property until after it may be too late to effectively fight all of this.
Once this unique, iconic, historical Americanšŗšø landmark is forced out of Avon by the State of CT, it will be gone forever.
