🔥 It only takes a spark.

May is National Wildfire Awareness Month—a reminder that one small action can have devastating consequences. As conditions dry out, be extra cautious with campfires, equipment, and anything that could ignite a flame.

Do your part to help prevent wildfires and protect our communities, forests, and wildlife. 🌲

It’s still winter but this spring-like weather is a great reminder to work on wildfire prep before fire season arrives.

Clear pine needles and dry leaves from your roof and gutters, trim trees and shrubs away from your home, remove dead vegetation, and create a defensible space around your property. Stack firewood away from structures and keep grass cut short as it grows.

A few small steps now can make a big difference when fire season hits. Let’s do our part to keep our homes, neighbors, and community safe.

PINE VALLEY FIREWISE RECOGNIZED FOR WILDFIRE MITIGATION WORK

BAKER COUNTY -- The Oregon Department of Forestry—Northeast Oregon District recently recognized the Pine Valley Firewise Community for their collaborative efforts in fuel reduction projects.

According to the ODF, Pine Valley Firewise is led by Debi Lawrence and collaborates with community partners such as The Oregon State Fire Marshal, Baker ODF, and OSU Extension.

The Idaho Youth Corps returned again this year as the boots-on-the-ground to get the work done. ODF Northeast Oregon stated, “This season, the crew stayed busy completing critical fuel-reduction and wildfire-mitigation projects, helping protect vulnerable landowners living in high-fire-risk areas. In addition to hands-on fieldwork, the youth corps participated in education and outreach events led by subject-matter experts from Baker ODF, OSFM, and Baker County OSU Extension—building skills, awareness, and long-term community resilience.”

Oregon Department of Forestry officials thanked all involved “…for your continued dedication to wildfire preparedness, collaboration, and community safety.”

We all love Christmas trees and their sparkly lights but make sure you’re following these rules this holiday season to avoid your tree becoming fire hazard.

Before you plug in those lights—check your tree’s location. Keep it away from heat sources and exits, and make sure it gets watered daily.
