We’re giving the Central Valley South a chance to take center stage and show why they’re a star. Top local businesses are stepping into the spotlight at the iconic The Ovation Theatre in downtown Bakersfield for an epic three-story party celebrating the people and flavors which make our community so special. 🍕🍞🥐

Meet Bentley and Kadar Waller, the brothers behind Bentley Bowl. 🍗✨

It all started during the pandemic. While the rest of the world was figuring out what to do next, 14-year-old Bentley Waller was sitting in Zoom meetings with his mom, cooking up a plan to build something around the food he loved most, soul food. 🙌

What followed was four years of late nights in the kitchen with his mentor, Auntie Ora, testing recipes, tweaking techniques, and working toward one thing: a fried chicken which could put Bakersfield on the map. The result is Bentley Bowl’s signature chicken, lighter, crispier, packed with California flavor, and rooted in the soul food traditions which inspired it. 🔥

When his brother Kadar came home from college, the operation leveled up. Both brothers grew up and went to high school locally, played basketball at CSU Bakersfield, and Kadar earned his MBA from CSU Bakersfield. Bentley brought the culinary vision. Kadar brought the business mind. Together, with their parents, Auntie Ora, and a dedicated team, they turned a teenage dream into a legitimate California brand. Bentley continues his education and basketball journey at Itawamba Community College while helping grow the brand. 🏀❤️

What started as a food truck now includes a permanent kitchen in downtown Bakersfield. In 2024, 12-year-old Chef Livv launched Pink Pie as a collaboration under the Bentley Bowl brand system, baking signature desserts like caramel cake and peach cobbler right out of the food truck. Add in Sippin Swae for beverages, and this family is building something much bigger. 🩷🧁

Rooted in soul. Raised in California. 🖤

Apple season is almost here. 🍎🍂

Pulford Appletree Orchard in Tehachapi is opening for the season on September 5th. This family-owned, 10-acre orchard was founded in 1981 and grows 19 different varieties of tree-ripened apples harvested from late August through early November. 🍏🍎

What started on Goodrick Road off Highway 58 eventually moved to its current home on Highline Road, where over 2,000 trees were planted in the spring of 1994 and the first crop was harvested in the fall of 1996. Farming this orchard is a year-round commitment, from winter pruning to spring bloom season to summer thinning and watering, all leading up to harvest. 🌱🍎

Stop by their on-site fruit stand and barn to grab fresh apples and enjoy picnic areas, a kid-friendly hay bale maze, and vintage farm equipment on display. A perfect fall day trip from Bakersfield. 🍂✨

Bakersfield Barbecue Co. is a veteran-owned barbecue spot in downtown Bakersfield which has built a loyal following for doing things the right way. All meats are smoked daily and once they’re gone, they’re gone. Brisket, pulled pork, ribs, tri-tip, hot links, smoked turkey, and their signature “Outlaw” burger featuring a half-pound house-ground brisket patty. 🥩

Torres Catering has been winning over the community with delicious flavors for over three decades 🔥

This family-owned food truck has been serving Bakersfield since 1994. Founded by Valentin and Yvonne, Torres Catering runs on scratch-made family recipes, including an enchilada mole sauce passed down from Valentin’s grandmother 🙌

Their claim to fame? A 7-time award-winning Chile Verde which they put on everything. Burritos, baked potatoes, mac and cheese, breakfast burritos. And the portions are massive 🏆🌶️

🥳 Yelp Elites and their plus ones came together to celebrate the newest taqueria in downtown Bakersfield! We threw an exclusive taco party to welcome Tacos Mi Pa to downtown, and it was a night full of flavor, connection, and good vibes all around.

It was amazing to come together to celebrate a new local spot, connecting with fellow Yelpers, and being a part of something special in downtown Bakersfield. 🎉

Kage Asian Bistro is officially open on Rosedale Hwy and it’s bringing a unique blend of deliciousness to town. Japanese-Latin fusion, Robatayaki-style charcoal grilling, craft cocktails, and a nightlife lounge that keeps the doors open late on weekends. Dinner and vibes, all under one roof. 🥢🔥

Founded by local entrepreneur Tim He, Kage (meaning “Shadow” in Japanese) opened its doors on May 2, 2026 with a vision to blend Japanese soul with Latin-American flair. Think ribeye asparagus skewers, chili ponzu gyoza, miso black cod, lobster lo mein, house fried rice with crispy pork belly, cocktails like the Golden Koi and Dragon Dance, and comfortable booths in a space that shifts from upscale dinner to full lounge mode as the night rolls on. 🍸🥩
