THURSDAY AT 6 PM: In antebellum America, enslaved girls were among the most vulnerable members of society due to anti-Black racism, sexism, and ageism. But Black girls and their community laid claim to childhood innocence despite enslavers’ persistent efforts to adultify them.

Through a close reading of Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl (1861) and Louisa Picquet, the Octoroon: A Tale of Southern Slave Life (1861), MaDeja Leverett, a doctoral candidate in history at Johns Hopkins University, will highlight the girlhood experiences of Harriet Jacobs and Louisa Picquet as significant examples that speak to the intricacies of enslaved girls’ lives.

JUNE 12TH AT 12 PM: In 19th-century Japan, woodblock prints known as ukiyo-e, or "pictures of the floating world," delighted the Japanese public with images of famous actors, dreamy landscapes, and idealized depictions of laboring classes. The prints' portability and availability made them some of the earliest pieces of art to enter into the Western souvenir trade, and their impact became global.

Mining Evergreen Museum & Library's robust but rarely seen collection of Japanese prints, Johns Hopkins Museums Curator of Collections Michelle Fitzgerald will highlight the artistry and reception of ukiyo-e as well as their impact on both Western and Japanese artists into the 20th century.

Just in time for National Historic Preservation Month, Homewood Museum’s 225-year-old south-facing windows have been diligently repaired- the latest in an ongoing series of preservation and restoration projects at Homewood and its sister museum, Evergreen Museum & Library. Both museums maintain working relationships with a roster of top artisans and companies specializing in historic preservation.

The windows’ restoration caps off a spate of recent exterior and interior projects, including replacing and repairing the house’s south side shutters; re-building the portico, steps, and railing on the north side of the house; re-finishing the north side door; repainting its historic interior spaces; and an extensive restoration of the Homewood property’s original privy.

It's and we've got an exciting update about a new cultural landmark coming to the Eisenhower Library! 🏗️ 🎨 ✨

Lindsay Adams’ monumental diptych Kind of Blue (1959), inspired by Miles Davis’ iconic jazz album, has been acquired by Johns Hopkins University for permanent installation in the newly renovated Eisenhower Library.

The 14-foot-wide abstract work spanning two canvases explores Black history, migration, memory, and belonging through layered shades of blue and jazz-inspired improvisation. First exhibited as part of Ceremony, a solo show of new work by Adams at the university’s Frary Gallery in Washington, D.C., the piece will become part of the library’s reimagined public art program when the space reopens in 2027.
