It’s day 11 of our 31 Days of Inspiring Women for the month of December! Today’s inspirational woman is Emma Lazarus. She penned one of the most recognizable poems in America today: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free…” Her poem, “The New Colossus,” is engraved on a plaque at the base of the Statue of Liberty. Lazarus became one of the most successful Jewish American authors.

It’s day 12 of our 31 Days of Inspiring Women for the month of December!

Today’s inspirational woman is Agent 355, who is considered by intelligence historians to be America’s first female undercover operations officer. During the American Revolution, 355 spied against the British as part of the Culper spy ring and is credited for helping uncover the Benedict Arnold treasonous plot. Agent 355 is heralded as one of the best intelligence officers because her identity is still unknown to us today after almost 230 years.

Today in women’s history, Elsie Clews Parsons was born in 1875.

Parsons is an anthropologists and folklorist who studied Native American (mostly Hopi and Pueblo) tribes. She became president of the American Ethnological Society, the American Folklore Society and the first female president for the American Anthropological Association. The American Ethnological Society named an award after her and it is given every year for the best graduate student essay.
