Pride Month is here. So is the work. 🏳️‍🌈

Here in San Bernardino and Orange County, 30.4% of foster youth self-identify as LGBTQ+ nearly three times the rate of the general youth population. They’ve been there all along. The question is whether the homes they land in see them.

California has had their back since 2003: AB 458, the Foster Care Non-Discrimination Act, was the first law in the U.S. to protect LGBTQ+ youth and adults in foster care from discrimination. But laws don’t replace homes. Affirming families do.

Pride Month begins Today June 1st and we wanted to start the conversation early. 🏳️‍🌈

Here’s a statistic that should stop us all in our tracks: 30.4% of California foster youth self-identify as LGBTQ+. That’s nearly THREE TIMES the rate of the general youth population. (Williams Institute, UCLA)

California law has had their back since 2003: AB 458, the Foster Care Non-Discrimination Act, was the first law in the U.S. to explicitly protect LGBTQ+ youth and adults in the foster care system. A child cannot be moved out of a placement because of who they are.

But laws don’t replace homes. LGBTQ+ foster youth still average more placements, are more likely to live in group homes, and report being treated poorly at over twice the rate of their peers.

The fix isn’t complicated. It’s affirming families who say: you belong here.

73 children. Four decades. One couple. And they’re still saying yes.

We won’t share their names — they prefer it that way — but we will share their story. They’ve raised six children of their own, supported 26 grandchildren, and welcomed 73 foster children into their home, ranging in age from newborns to 17-year-olds.

When asked why they keep going, the answer was simple: “It’s about giving them a chance, in the first couple of years of their life, to know what love is all about. And stability.”

They are the reason we do what we do. And they are the reason we keep asking — *could you be next?* You don’t have to foster 73 kids. Even one changes everything.
