The continued success of the Trail is made possible through community partnerships, local government participation, and private support. The Spanish Moss Trail, the Lowcountry’s Rails to Trail, is a developing greenway located in Beaufort County, SC that has become a "Must-Experience" outdoor activity for residents and visitors alike. In the past four years, 7 miles of the Trail have opened drawing more than 36,000 people to enjoy this 12-foot wide, paved path dedicated to those who want to walk, run, bike, bird watch, or fish ‒ offering spectacular water and marsh vistas, coastal wildlife viewing, and historic points of interest. When the master plan is fully implemented, the Spanish Moss Trail will span 14 miles as it meanders through Spanish moss-draped neighborhoods and the Lowcountry’s beautiful wetlands. The Friends of the Spanish Moss Trail (FSMT) was founded in 2012, by community-minded leaders, as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life in Beaufort County by advocating for the development, enhancements and maintenance of the Spanish Moss Trail. The FSMT sustainable partnerships and investors include: Beaufort-Jasper Water & Sewer Authority, Beaufort County, James M. Cox Foundation, BlueCross BlueShield of SC, City of Beaufort, Town of Port Royal, Beaufort Memorial Hospital, private foundations, and a large network of individuals and businesses. Soon after the FSMT was formed, it partnered with the PATH Foundation of Atlanta, an organization with 25 years of experience building more than 200 miles of trails in the greater Atlanta area. PATH developed a 10-Phase Master Plan for the 14-mile long, beautifully landscaped, 12-foot wide concrete Spanish Moss Trail – designed for the enjoyment of bikers, runners, walkers, fishers, and nature enthusiasts of all stages of life. When the Master Plan is fully implemented, the Trail will connect Port Royal, Beaufort, Burton, Grays Hill and Seabrook – through neighborhoods, parks, water and marsh views, nature preserves, cultural features, historic sites and businesses for recreation, transportation and conservation purposes.

Mission: The Friends of the Spanish Moss Trail are dedicated to improving the quality of life in Beaufort County, SC by advocating for the development, enhancements and maintenance of the Spanish Moss Trail.

Covid-19 Update:
How You Can Help Keep the Trail Open

The Friends of the Spanish Moss Trail work year round on long-term Trail developments as well as advocate for its maintenance and enhancements. Today, the Friends are supporting the County and City’s public safety messaging by installing short-term signage along the Trail to communicate the Covid-19 guidelines. During this time of social distancing, the Spanish Moss Trail’s 10-mile, wide linear recreational space has never been more popular: from everyday homeschooling PE classes, to a safe place to exercise, to enjoying the spring flowers, and breathing in the salt air. Public health experts agree that outdoor exercise is essential and the Trail needs to stay open as long as everyone:
- Maintains a distance of six feet from people (unless they are a part of your household)
- Prevents crowding at trailheads and intersections
- Avoids passing others too closely
- Alerts others of your approach
- Cleans up after their pet (pet-waste stations available throughout the Trail)

What Else Can You Do?
A great way you can help is to volunteer to pick up litter along the Trail. It is a great activity for families or individuals. Simply bring work gloves and trash bags and pick up trash anywhere you enjoy the Spanish Moss Trail.

All Beaufort County Residents:
Please Vote YES on Question #4
The Spanish Moss Trail passes through many beautiful rural and undeveloped areas and it is one of the features of the Trail that makes it so appealing. The Friends of the Spanish Moss Trail believe it is important to maintain the opportunity to preserve those beautiful rural lands in the future. On the ballet, Question #4 is called General Obligation Bond. This bond would be for $25 million to allow Beaufort County to continue funding the Rural and Critical Lands Program. Please note that Question #4 is not titled Rural and Critical Land Program so it is important that you understand the purpose of that General Obligation Bond. Attached is a flyer which explains the importance of the Rural and Critical Lands Program.

General information

The Spanish Moss Trail encourages healthy lifestyles by providing a paved, dedicated pedestrian and bike trail that connects neighborhoods, parks and businesses; spurs economic development and neighborhood revitalization; offers public access to spectacular water and marsh views; and promotes tourism. Today, nearly 7 miles of the Trail are open and enjoyed by more than 36,500 people each year – connecting the City of Beaufort and the Town of Port Royal. The next phase will continue the Trail toward the communities beyond the Marine Corps Air Station and through the Poppy Hill community to Clarendon Road – bringing the Lowcountry a connected 11-mile Trail by the end of 2016.

What is the prettiest section of the trail ?
Visiting this weekend. How do we find out the distance b/w access points? Thanks.
This weekend I switched my Amazon Smiles to donate a percentage of every purchase I make though Amazon to donate to Friends of the Spanish Moss Trail! I had not realized that was an option.
Have any of you walked or ridden through the new tunnel? I feel this is much better than an at grade crossing. Although I do wish it were a bit wider and the pavement a bit smoother and the drains a bit closer to grade.
This is the entrance to the trail off Brotherhood. This was about an hour ago and it is still coming down hard.
How many (continuous) miles of the Spanish Moss Trail is paved? (For inline skating or Trikke riding)? Trikke Universe
