St James Township is seeking to fill two Trustee vacancies on the township’s Board of Trustees. To qualify for this position, the applicant must be an elector in St. James Township. The two selected candidates will be appointed by the Township Board.
A Trustee is responsible, in accordance with state law, to serve as a legislative and voting member of the township board. Unlike the supervisor, clerk, and treasurer, trustees do not have specific day-to-day administrative duties assigned by statute. Instead, their
primary role is to attend meetings, represent residents, ensure financial health, and vote on all board matters.
Key duties and responsibilities include:
1. Board governance, including participating in deliberations, voting on legislative and administrative issues brought before the board, and policy creation.
2. Financial oversight, including budget approval and financial transactions and health.
3. Enacting ordinances and approving contracts.
4. Appointing officials and constituent services.
5. Additional assignments on committee roles.
Trustees serve a four-year-terms as an elected position, with these elections coinciding with the U.S. presidential election. This vacancy has a term limit until November 20, 2028, unless the incumbent runs and is voted in at the November 2028 election.

to the St James Township Clerk’s email as noted on the application. The Township Board official who serves on the Planning Commission as an ex-officio member has a term equal to their term as a member of the board. Training is provided for
Planning Commission members.
