The Bel Air Armory will host a Summer Camp Expo on February 27, 2021. This will be an opportunity for parents/care givers to gather info from all types of Harford County camps. If you already coordinate a summer camp and would like to participate as a vendor, please email Julia Potler at [email protected] and tell her a little about what you do. We are in information gathering stages right now and more information will be sent out at a later date.

Also, if you are a summer camp looking for space to run your camp, the Bel Air Armory will be an option in Summer 2021. With a full commercial kitchen, 3 classroom spaces, an outdoor park with stage, and a large open "gym" space with stage, the possibilities are endless! Contact Julia Potler for more info!

Armory Fun Facts continued...

In the fall of 2016, construction was completed on the garages behind the Bel Air Armory, as this was a vision of the town to provide incubator space for start-ups or businesses to begin and grow. Armory Marketplace is open to the public and encourages residents and visitors alike to shop local.

Did you know there is a beautiful park on the side of the Armory? It has been used for casual gatherings as well as formal events when part of an Armory rental, such as a wedding!

In 2010, the construction of the adjacent Frederick Ward Park, or Armory Park as some refer, launched the Armory's new role as more of a complex than a stand-alone building. And prior to the park, the front façade and entryway of the building received a new handicap-accessible ramp and steps.

Armory Fun Facts continued...

On April 14, 1984, the Armory was dedicated and named in honor of the late Lt. General Milton A. Reckord, Adjutant General for the State of Maryland for 45 years.

In August of 2004, the Armory was donated to the Town of Bel Air. As caretakers of this iconic landmark, the Town has been dedicated to maintaining and renovating the building, and preserving its military, cultural, and community heritage. In November of 2015, the Town celebrated the 100th Anniversary of the historic building.

Keep the Armory in mind for your special event!

Another little fun fact for today!

Following the Wars, the armory became primarily a community center which also housed town services, including the American Red Cross, the county library and, until somewhat recently, a recruiting office for the modern Maryland Army National Guard.

Related to support of the American Red Cross, the Armory will host blood drives on April 14th and 15th. Our appointment slots are currently full, but take this time to consider donating at another location. Visit www.redcrossblood.org for info.

Stay tuned for more fun facts!

How about a daily dose of history to pass the time?

The castle-like Armory, designed by architect John Bentz Hamme; Builder: Lawrence Whalen & Co, was built in 1915, of Port Deposit granite, with two hexagonal crenellated towers and its machicolated cornice (next time you drive or walk by, look at the top)! Bel Air's local National Guard units marched from its doors to the Mexican border, and to service in Europe in World Wars I and II. This building has seen its share of patriotic festivals, community send-offs and a 1918 victory jubilee. The Armory even became Bel Air's Civilian Defense Headquarters during World War II.

Stay tuned for more fun facts!

The Bel Air Armory is currently looking to add a summer camp offering the week of August 31-September 4, 2020 daytime--the week before school begins on September 8th!

We could host an art camp, theater or music camp, indoor sports camp, etc. This camp would not be coordinated or managed by the Bel Air Armory. Your program would need to have complete staffing, insurance, and handle all registrations.

If you are interested in leading a camp here at the Armory, please reach out to Julia Potler at [email protected].

Our first annual Winter Wonderland at the Armory in Bel Air was a great success! Thanks to everyone who came to enjoy the lights, visit Santa, sip cocoa, take in It's a Wonderful Life, have presents wrapped or enjoy a carriage ride through downtown Bel Air! We are grateful to the volunteers and our co-sponsors The Greater Bel Air Community Foundation and the Bel Air Downtown Alliance for their partnership.

Winter Wonderland at the Armory in Bel Air

Please see updated information regarding Winter Wonderland at the Armory in Bel Air for this evening. Sorry for any inconvenience! Bundle up and come shop and dine downtown for the Bel Air Downtown Alliance Sip and Shop from 5-8pm!

Due to extreme cold predictions this evening, the owner of Tanglao Carriages and myself have decided that it would be in the best interest of both the riders and the animal, that we reschedule tonight's carriage rides.
While we understand that this will be a disappointment to those that have planned to enjoy a ride, we need to take the overall health and happiness of the horse into consideration. The demand has been so great, Tanglao Carriages will return on December 28th and conduct carriage rides from 5-9. They also plan to bring an additional carriage to help ease any disappointment that this has caused.

This Saturday the 21st will remain the same:
5-9 Carriage rides
5-8 Visit with Santa, and hot cocoa
CCA will be wrapping gifts in the Armory
