What a great way to ring in summer!

Yesterday, clients and staff at our medical adult day care in Harford County celebrated the first day of summer with a very fitting craft project. The group used small terracotta pots, fake moss, pipe cleaners, and paper petals to create beautiful faux flower arrangements. Great activity to kick off the new season!

Yesterday, our adult day care clients in Harford County had a fantastic time interacting with snakes, lizards and all sorts of reptiles courtesy of the folks at Bob's Critters. We're always looking for unique, hands-on experiences to keep our clients engaged -- this certainly qualifies.

Yesterday, FCS staff were able to experience firsthand the physical and mental challenges that individuals with dementia are forced to deal with every day. The Virtual Dementia Tour makes use of patented devices that alter participant's senses while they try to complete common everyday tasks such as folding clothes, filling a pill box or unlocking a door. For example, special glasses simulate impaired vision, while headphones pump in distorted and distracting sounds that individuals with dementia often hear.

It's important that we as a community are able to better identify with, and understand, the behaviors and needs of those with dementia. Thank you to Second Wind Dreams featuring the Virtual Dementia Tour for creating such an eye-opening experience.

Administration on Aging

Thought-provoking article about the harm related to social isolation. This is a serious health issue – it’s associated with higher rates of chronic disease, depression, dementia, and death, and it affects one in five people over age 50.

Older adults (and their families and caregivers) might find this brochure, which includes a self-assessment checklist helpful (http://www.n4a.org/Files/N4a-HI-Scams-brochure-access.pdf), and the Eldercare Locator (800-677-1116 or www.eldercare.com) can help people find help in their communities. (The Eldercare Locator is operated by the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging with funding from the Administration for Community Living.) Check out the Home for the Holidays campaign (http://www.n4a.org/h4h2016), which focuses on this issue.

Comrade Project | Family and Children's Services

Support the Harford County Comrade Project this holiday season and provide crucial care for local, elderly veterans. (Your donation will allow you to receive a tax deduction for 2016.)

For the past 30 years, Family and Children’s Services Harford Medical Adult Day Care has offered some of the most vulnerable members of our community – many of whom are veterans – the option to age in place and preserve their independence. Our facility couples expert medical oversight with carefully designed programming geared toward keeping elders cognitively stimulated as well as physically and socially active. Open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., we also provide that crucial relief for caregivers who look after their loved ones around the clock.

Right now, we have veterans who qualify for adult day care and would benefit greatly from our program, but simply cannot afford to pay the $85 per day cost. Any size donation you make will help us subsidize that daily rate and get them in the door. Our goal: Raise $8,500, or the equivalent of 100 days of care. Help us get there.

To learn more, or to visit our location on the Harford Community College campus, please call 410-838-3222 and ask for Julie. We thank you for your support, as do the veterans that we serve now, and for the years to come.
