This week on 🌿All Things Native🌿 check out this great information on native trees!
🌿There are numerous native tree species throughout Maryland that provide habitat and food for many native mammals, birds, and insects!
🌲There are many species of native evergreen trees that keep their foliage and provide for native animals year round!
🌳Maryland also has a variety of native deciduous trees and although they loose their leaves in the fall and winter, the leaf litter provides food and cover for many invertebrate species!

🌎 Happy Wetland Month! 🌎
Wetlands are critical in supporting the healthy waters and diverse wildlife of the region. But development, invasive species and sea level rise threaten these important areas.
This week on 🌿All Things Native🌿 let's talk about the Fowler’s Toad (Anaxyrus fowleri)!
🐸This native is 2-3 inches long with three or more warts in each of the large dark spots on its brown, grey or greenish back!
🐸A light line often bisects this native's back from between the eyes to its lower back!
🐸The Fowler's Toad can be found primarily in areas with sandy soils, but also in other habitats from fields to forests!
🐸Listen for the call, a short nasally buzzing trill “quaaaa” lasting from 1-4 seconds, on humid nights!

What is Garlic Mustard❓
🌱This leafy green plant is native to Europe and has become an invasive species in North America!
🌱Garlic mustard develops early in the year and can outcompete many native plants for resources!
🌱Spreading at a rate of 2,500 square miles per year, this plant runs the risk of creating unhealthy forests with very little biodiversity!
🌱To get rid of this invasive, try to hand pull the plants after it rains, early in the season before they have started to create seeds! Then dispose of the plants in your garbage 🗑
🌱Or get out early in the season when the shoots are young and use it for cooking!
Harford County Government
Invasive garlic mustard is overtaking forest (or forested) ecosystems across North America.
This week on 🌿All Things Native🌿 let's talk about a beautiful wildflower, Foxglove Beardtongue (Penstemon digitalis)!
🌸Keep an eye out for this native! The bell-shaped white flowers blossom from late May through June!
🌸This native grows to 3 feet tall and can be found in moist meadows and woodland openings throughout the state!
🌸Foxglove Beardtongue can be found in full sun to light shade, tolerates all soil textures, and excels in compact urban soils!
🌸The flowers of this native are a favorite amongst 🐝bumble bees🐝!
🌸This native's fall foliage is a beautiful red and semi-evergreen in the winter!
Harford County Government
Foxglove Beardtongue (Penstemon digitalis) is a Maryland native plant with spikes of white flowers in late spring.

🌱Plant Native Plants
🌿Let your Garden Grow a Mullet - Grow traditional species in the front of your garden while letting the back grow wild!
🦋Keep a Pollinator Lawn - Mow your lawn at your mower’s highest height setting so that more plants can flower in it!
🐦Maintain your Bird Feeders and Bee Houses - Make sure to clean these at regular intervals to prevent disease!
✂️Trim the Stems each Spring - The best time to trim last year’s dead stems is at the very end of winter!
🍃Leave the Leaves each Fall - Leaving leaf litter unshredded protects insects and chrysalises nestled within!
🌸Diversify your Blooms - Add a variety of species to increase your garden's blooming season for pollinators!
🚫Avoid Friendly Fire - Avoid pesticides that can harm pollinators!
🌎Slow down - And go enjoy nature!

With a little know-how you can boost biodiversity close to home
This week on 🌿All Things Native🌿 let's talk about a fun pollinator, the Zebra Swallowtail (Eurytides marcellus)!
🦋This native has long, triangular wings with black, zebra-like stripes on a whitish background!
🦋Caterpillars feed on paw paw leaves and adults feed on nectar from flowers such as redbud, milkweed and verbena!
🦋It takes about one month for a zebra swallowtail to mature from egg to adult and adults live up to six months!
🦋The zebra swallowtail flies erratically and low to the ground with shallow wingbeats!

Time for the final 🌸Spring Landscape🌸 Tip!
When developing a plan for incorporating native plants into your landscape:
🌸Consider starting with seeds and planting a native meadow!
🌸Beware of the “wildflower meadow mixes” sold in many retail establishments. These mixes often include non-native seeds and are often dominated by annuals that will not persist.
🌸Maintain a clean edge to help your native plant garden fit in to your landscape!
🌱Happy Planting🌱

This week on 🌿All Things Native🌿 let's talk about a risk to our favorite native species, the ❌ Spotted Lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) ❌
❗️This invasive species has recently hatched, so keep your eyes peeled❗️
❌This invasive is a planthopper native to eastern Asia
❌They feed on plants by sucking sap from trunks and stems. This has been shown to cause stunted growth, localized damage, and reduced yields.
❌ This invasive feeds on over 70 plant species including grape, black walnut, red maple, silver maple, eastern white pine, weeping willow, black willow, black cherry, sycamore

Time for 🌸Spring Landscape🌸 Tip 5️⃣
When developing a plan for incorporating native plants into your landscape:
🌸Pay attention to how large plants will get at maturity and follow standard garden design principles when deciding where to put new plants.
🌸Put tall species at the back and smaller species up front.
🌸Think in three dimensions – in forested ecosystems you can have overstory trees, understory trees, shrubs and ground covers growing in the same area, but in different vertical strata.
🌸Plant odd-numbered grouping of plants in clumps and swaths to create aesthetically pleasing garden designs!

What does 💧Pollution Prevention💧 mean to Harford Streams?
💧As Harford County has developed, we have constructed roads, parking lots, and driveways that disrupt the natural flow of water.
💧When rain lands on these hard surfaces, it is not able to seep into the ground and instead becomes stormwater runoff.
💧The runoff flows into a stormdrain and travels through a network of pipes to the nearest waterway.
💧An important mission of Harford Streams is to keep our waterways clean of pollutants or non-stormwater materials into the storm sewer system via overland flow, direct dumping, or illegal connections.
💧Stormwater pollutants consist of motor oil, yard waste, transmission fluid, fertilizer and much more!
Help us with this pollution prevention by keeping 💧Only Rain Down the Drain💧

With Easter right around the corner, let's talk about the 🐇Eastern Cottontail (Sylvilagus floridanus)🐇 this week on 🌿All Things Native🌿
🐇Cottontail rabbits have speckled brown fur, which fades to white underneath, big eyes, long ears, large hind legs and feet, and of course a small tuft of white fur as their tail!
🐇Cottontails are found throughout Maryland on farms, in orchards, and in backyards, so keep your eyes out for these native friends!
🐇Cottontails are almost exclusively vegetarian as they use a wide variety of plants for food. They also get their water from the plants they eat!
🐇Surprisingly, eastern cottontails are very territorial. When startled, they will run in a zig-zag pattern up to 18 miles per hour!
🐇Eastern cottontails are crepuscular- meaning that they are most active at dawn and dusk!

Time for 🌸Spring Landscape🌸 Tip 3️⃣
Develop a plan for incorporating native plants into your landscape!
Here's How:
It is OK to start small!
🌸Focus on transitioning small areas of your landscape to native species each year.
🌸Start from scratch by planting a small native plant garden in a corner of your lawn.
🌸You can expand out each year and many native plants will help you by spreading prolifically!

🦀Recreational crabbing is about to kick off in Maryland on April 1!🦀
🦀To prepare, the annual winter dredge survey, conducted each year by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science from December through March, estimates how many crabs are overwintering in the Bay’s muddy bottom.
🦀The study is a key indicator of the size and health of the population that scientists and fishery managers use to set catch limits and other regulations.
🦀Crab populations have been declining, possibly due to invasive predators and climate change, so it is important to continue this scientific monitoring!
🦀Stay tuned for the results of this year's annual winter dredge survey in a few months🦀
The season for catching Chesapeake Bay blue crabs is already underway in Virginia, and recreational crabbing will officially kick off in Maryland on April 1. Several boats have been plying the waters the past several months, however, to pursue the crustaceans not for steaming but for science.
This week on 🌿All Things Native🌿 let's talk about a fragrant favorite, 🌿Sweet Pepperbush (Clethra alnifolia)🌿
🌿This native, also called summersweet, is found in forested wetlands, floodplains, and swamps
🌿Spikes of highly fragrant white or pink flowers bloom in July and August
🌿This native grows 6 to 12 inches tall
🌿Sweet pepperbush is ideal for a rain garden, pollinator garden, fragrance garden, privacy screen, or shrub border!
🌿The flowers provide food for native bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, and a variety of songbirds eat the seeds

This week on 🌿All Things Native🌿 let's talk about the largest in the weasel family, the Long-Tailed Weasel (Mustela frenata)!
🌿This native's slender and elongated body ranges from 11 to 17 inches long
🌿In the mid-Atlantic region (including Maryland) and farther south, the Long-Tailed Weasel remains brown throughout the year, as opposed to turning white during the winter in colder climates!
🌿In Maryland, the long-tailed weasel lives in marshland, woodlands, intermittent grasslands and rocky outcrops.
🌿This native lives in dens made from hollow logs, tree stumps, among rock piles or in burrows that it has taken over by killing the former occupants.
🌿Weasels feed on mice and other small mammals, but weasels will also eat birds, rabbits and amphibians when available.
🌿Long-tailed weasels quite effectively can swim and climb!
