During this very exciting and challenging time for both you and your kids (Covid-19 sure does add an interesting twist!), I thought that I would share my Alfred Story with you. My son Noah started at Alfred in the fall of 2014 as an Arts major. His academic advisors recommended that he minor in Arts Education, which pleased his parents greatly. During his Freshman year, Noah told his mother and me that he loved the town of Alfred and that he wanted to stay there after graduation. A kid from Philadelphia wants to settle in Alfred, New York . . . how many times will he change his mind before graduation? I'll tell you . . . during the winter break of his senior year, Noah bought a home in Alfred Station. Fast forward to graduation and a semester of substitute teaching, he tells us that teaching is not for him and that he wants to buy a bar in Alfred Station. After many months of talking back and forth (I managed restaurants for about 25 years) and Noah negotiating with the owner, he purchased the bar--right in the middle of a pandemic no less. After gutting the kitchen and putting it back together, hand-building the dining room furniture, adding a fun and very tasty menu, revamping the bar and adding outdoor seating, he finally opened for business at the end of May. As an aside, Noah mostly used me as a sounding board to bounce questions and ideas off of. He raised his own start-up capital and retained legal and financial guidance himself. He also negotiated the purchase himself! Alfred University gave my son a solid educational foundation, and the towns of Alfred and Alfred Station have turned out to be an ideal place for him to settle down and establish himself. My hope is that your kids (and you) also have great experiences while at Alfred! I am attaching today's post from the Old Mill Inn to show you what is going on there. Please stop by (or ask your student to stop by) and tell him his Dad says hi!
