Taken in 1936, this is a photo of the Women's Home Demonstration Club of Benbrook. In rural areas, a home demonstration agent provided instruction on many of the necessities of rural life, including how to can food or fabricate a mattress. The program was funded through collaboration between the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the State of Texas. Gathering in homes and churches around town, the meetings were as much social events as educational sessions. (Photo courtesy of Mary Wallace Layne)

A fire nearly consumed the nearby community of Wheatland, forcing ranchers to fight the fire with cattle sprayers. This near-tragedy spurred the men of Benbrook to form a volunteer fire department. Serving on a volunteer basis, many men signed on to protect the community, including A.R. Cartwright, D.I. Sessums, Dick Wallace, H.S. "Doc" Duncan, Ed Sproles, Joe Skinner, J.B. Bowles, and Jim Childers, and several others. (photo courtesy of Cindy Childers Hughes).
