This Labor Day weekend, I’ve been thinking about the people who make our community what it is. I see how hard you work every day to provide for your families, help your neighbors, and keep our community moving forward and I want you to know how much I personally appreciate you.

I know life isn’t easy right now. Costs are high, and many families are working harder just to pay their bills. Through it all, you continue to show up.

Your Sheriff’s Office exists because of you, and it is an honor to serve our community.

Thank you for everything you do. Let’s continue to look out for one another, support one another, and remember that we are stronger together.

Tonight, I am unfortunately finding myself having to address false accusations and defend myself against claims that simply are not true.

I want to be very clear. I do not know who operates the YouTube account “Steve the Monkey Trainer.” Whoever is responsible for that account is not part of my campaign and should stop producing the videos immediately. I have never authorized, directed, coordinated, requested, or approved any content posted by that account.

Any accusation or suggestion otherwise is false.
I am responsible for my words, my actions, and the conduct of my campaign. I will not accept responsibility for the independent actions of people on social media whom I do not know and do not control.

When my DD214 was inquired about I was fully transparent about my own military service, to include publicly releasing it. I respect Candidate McLaughlin’s military service. Any questions regarding his assignments, training, qualifications, or characterization of his service are only appropriate for him to address.

I have learned that ethics complaints have been filed against me regarding these allegations. I welcome a fair and thorough review of the facts. I am confident that any investigation will confirm exactly what I have stated from the beginning: there is no connection between me, my campaign, and the YouTube account “Steve the Monkey Trainer.”

Those who filed these complaints hoping to uncover such a connection are going to be highly disappointed.

My campaign is about the issues that matter to the people of Deschutes County, not false accusations, speculation, or attempts to connect me or my campaign to an anonymous social media account.

I will continue to run my campaign the same way I have led as Sheriff: with integrity, accountability, and transparency.

I will not allow false accusations or political distractions to take my attention away from what matters most. I will remain focused on serving the people of Deschutes County, leading the Sheriff’s Office, supporting and caring for the men and women who I serve alongside, and continue to earn the public’s trust.

It’s hard to believe summer is already coming to an end, and another school year is beginning!

As our kids head back to the classroom and our young adults begin or continue their college journey, I’m wishing each of them a safe, successful, and memorable year ahead.

To our parents, teachers, school staff, and everyone who plays a role in supporting our students thank you for all you do. The time you spend teaching, mentoring, encouraging, and caring for our children and young adults makes a difference every single day.

They are our future, and the investment you make in them today helps shape the community we will have tomorrow.

Stay safe, look out for one another, and have a wonderful school year!

My wife and I had a wonderful evening attending A Night of Hope, supporting Shepherd’s House Ministries.

It was great to see nearly 300 people come together to support the incredible work they do for people in need throughout our community. We enjoyed seeing so many familiar faces and having the opportunity to meet new people along the way.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this fundraiser and auction such a success.

I’m Truly Grateful

Seeing yard signs going up throughout our community means more to me than I can put into words.

Behind every sign is a person, a family, a neighbor, or a friend who believes in what we’re working toward together. I don’t take that support or your trust for granted.

Thank you to everyone who has reached out, shared a kind word, put up a sign, made a contribution or simply taken the time to have a conversation with me. Your encouragement continues to inspire me to work hard every day and stay focused on what matters most serving our community with integrity, honesty, humility, and purpose.

The momentum is building, but what means the most to me is who is standing behind it, our community.

It was great seeing so many familiar faces in La Pine Thursday night at Music in the Pines, part of the La Pine Park & Recreation District’s Summer Concert Series.

I appreciated the opportunity during intermission to visit with our community and provide an update on the hard work being done every day by our South County deputies and supervisors.

Having spent several years serving on patrol in La Pine, I have a strong connection to South County and the people who call it home. At the same time, every community across Deschutes County is important to me. I’m proud of the work our deputies and supervisors are doing throughout the county to keep our communities safe, remain visible and connected, and be there when our citizens need us most.

Events like Music in the Pines are also a great reminder of what makes our County so special, neighbors coming together, families enjoying time together, and a strong sense of community.

Thank you to everyone who stopped to say hello, ask questions, and share what’s important to you. As your Sheriff, staying connected and listening to the people we serve will always be a priority.

And a big thank you to the La Pine Park & Recreation District and everyone who helps make these summer concerts possible.

In light of the questions surrounding military discharge records during the previous election and with DD214s once again becoming a topic of conversation I believe the people I serve deserve clarity, not rumors or speculation.

As your Sheriff, I believe our employees and our community have a right to know who I am and the background I bring to our office.
Transparency matters. Trust matters. And the only way we continue rebuilding trust is by being willing to be open and honest even when it comes to ourselves.

For that reason, I am publicly releasing my DD214 for anyone who wishes to see it.

I didn't do anything heroic during my time in the United States Marine Corps. I simply raised my hand, took an oath, served my country, and received an honorable discharge. It is a chapter of my life that helped shape the values I still carry with me today: integrity, honor, courage, commitment, and service.

I am proud to have worn the uniform of our country, just as I am proud to wear the badge and serve the people of Deschutes County today.

I will never ask our employees or our community to accept a standard of transparency that I am unwilling to meet myself.
Leadership starts with accountability. Trust starts with the truth.

INCREDIBLE SUPPORT — THANK YOU, DESCHUTES COUNTY!
Our initial order of yard signs went even faster than we expected and is almost gone! I am incredibly grateful and humbled by the tremendous support our campaign continues to receive from citizens throughout Deschutes County.

More yard signs are already on order and will be here soon, along with our larger 4' x 4' and 4' x 8' field signs.

If you signed up for a sign at the Deschutes County Fair, we haven’t forgotten about you! We’ll be reaching out soon to make arrangements to get your sign to you.

What an incredible week at the Deschutes County Fair & Rodeo!
I’m truly grateful to everyone who stopped by to say hello, share a story, offer words of encouragement, and show their support. Every handshake, conversation, and kind word meant more to me than you know.

I also had a great time visiting with everyone at the 80th Annual Buckaroo Breakfast. What an incredible tradition filled with great people, great food, and a wonderful sense of community.

And of course, you must have a little fun at the fair! I joined Central Oregon Daily for their pie-eating contest and let’s just say it was a memorable experience!

A huge thank you to our amazing volunteers and everyone who helped make this week such a success. I continue to be humbled by the support and encouragement we receive from people throughout Deschutes County.

This campaign is about our community, the people who call it home, and the future we are building together.

Day 4 at the Deschutes County Fair and Rodeo, and what an incredible week it has been!

I've had the chance to meet so many wonderful people from across Deschutes County who have stopped by to share their support and appreciation for the dedicated men and women of the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office. Thank you for your trust and encouragement.

One conversation especially touched my heart. A gentleman I had interactions with 9 years ago during one of the lowest points in his life stopped by to thank me for treating him with respect and dignity. Today, he's clean and sober, owns his own business, and has completely turned his life around. I couldn't be prouder of him. Moments like this remind me that you never know what impact you may have on someone’s life.

A special thank you to all the volunteers who have staffed the campaign booth this week. Your time, energy, and support mean more than I can express.
