Zoning tip of the day -

FYI, same policy for the Village of Benzonia. They are not allowed in the right-of- way.

The City of Frankfort has received numerous complaints and reminds residents, businesses, organizations, and event sponsors that temporary signs are prohibited within public street rights-of-way.

Street rights-of-way include areas beyond the traveled roadway, such as shoulders, utility strips, boulevards, sidewalks, and other public lands associated with streets and highways. These areas are reserved for transportation, public utilities, and official traffic control devices.

Only authorized governmental signs are permitted within the public right-of-way. Temporary signs advertising businesses, services, political campaigns, real estate, special events, fundraisers, yard sales, garage sales, or similar activities are not allowed.

While communities have historically exercised enforcement discretion for short-term signs promoting community events or charitable activities, these signs are still not legally permitted within the public right-of-way and may be removed at any time.

Off-premises signs—those advertising a business, event, or activity located elsewhere than the property where the sign is placed—must also comply with applicable zoning regulations. Property owners and organizations should verify compliance before installing temporary signage.

Unauthorized signs located within public rights-of-way may be removed without notice by municipal personnel or the roadway authority.

Residents and organizations planning events are encouraged to place signs only on private property with the property owner's permission and in compliance with all applicable zoning regulations.

The City appreciates everyone's cooperation in maintaining safe roadways, preserving visibility for motorists, and enhancing the community's appearance.

Questions regarding sign placement requirements may be directed to the Office of the City Superintendent.

Congratulations to Upriver Pizza for being awarded a 2026 Match on Main Grant!

These grants are possible because the Village of Benzonia (staff, council and commissioners) put in the work to be a Redevelopment Ready Essentials designated community and participates in the Match on Main program. We are one of the few in Northern Michigan and it's paid off again! Thank you MEDC for recognizing another small business in Benzonia!

Match on Main grants will create 117 new full-time and 221 part-time jobs, activating over 210,000 square feet of vacant and underutilized space
