Safely Reopening Our Schools for Children and Teachers

I urge our school district and union partners to reach an agreement that will allow our elementary schools to reopen with health and safety protocols, as permitted by our Health Officer now that cases are below 25 per 100,000. I support the City of Berkeley prioritizing public school teachers and staff for vaccination if it's part of a negotiated agreement to return to classrooms when deemed safe by our Health Officer. We can do this! Our children are counting on us.

Proposed legislation would require California public schools to reopen in March if case counts are low

Proposed legislation would require CA public schools to reopen in March if case counts are low

“Schools should be ready to open as soon as public health authorities allow it,” said co-author Assemblyman Patrick O’Donnell, D-Long Beach.

https://www.sfchronicle.com/education/article/Proposed-legislation-would-require-California-15782784.php?fbclid=IwAR0gu7ioDCLS6b67G7VeexGxxkletoVjJY5Bn9JavCQgSHDm3d6bY5D_uB4

A bill by Assemblyman Phil Ting would force schools to open within two weeks after state and local health officials give the go-ahead, likely meaning the county is in the red, orange or yellow tiers.

Woman arrested in connection with trash can fire outside Berkeley synagogue

The Way Christian Church & Congregation Netivot Shalom are both treasured places of worship by congregants. I'm sad to hear that both institutions have experienced trash can arson fires within the last week and a half. We must take any fire set near a place of worship seriously, and Berkeley Police are continuing to investigate the fire that occurred at The Way. A suspect has been arrested in connection with the synagogue fire. Rabbi Chai Levy said she does not believe the fire at the synagogue was a hate crime and the woman arrested may have a mental illness, which reminds us of the human tragedy on our streets.

This is the second trash can arson fire on the same block in 12 days. Rabbi Chai Levy, who heads the congregation, does not believe it was a hate crime.

Just took a bike ride around town. I'm horrified by the # of ppl I saw downtown not wearing a mask.

Failure to follow basic safety precautions is directly tied to why you can't get your haircut, why you can't eat inside a restaurant, why your kids can't go to school.
