Family Lives Project

Family Lives Project Join us in our study on the parenting experiences of LGBT parents in the US (UC Berkeley) and Italy (University of Verona). Although social attitudes are changing rapidly, LGBTQI parents are still subjected to discrimination in many parts of the country as well as internationally.

Our work focuses on obtaining the perspectives of same-sex couples about being a parent, including support as well as discrimination.

From the Family Lives Project team members:

Yesterday we woke up to the horrific news of the mass shooting in Orlando. Most of the victims were, seemingly, young LGBTQ Latinxs, a community that, as research has shown, often experiences intersections of stigma and hate.

We are shaken, angry, and sad for the loss of so many. So much life lost, so much potential taken. With broken hearts, we send a message of love and support to everyone, because every one of us is affected by this tragedy. We especially send our love and support to the families and friends of those who died or were wounded in Orlando.

A day after the attack, as we are still mourning this loss, it is time also for action. We will continue, even with more will than before, to put our minds, hearts, and brains to work towards making the future a place where hate, transphobia, and homophobia have no space in our societies. There is still a lot of work to do, and we, through our research and through our everyday lives, hope to contribute a piece toward this goal.

In solidarity,

The Family Lives Project

What Queer Parenting Is Like When You Live In A Homophobic State

"The wait for legal marriage was extremely frustrating in a variety of ways and negatively impacted many queer families. For almost two years, I had to mark “single” on any official paperwork even though I was anything but. We’ve had to file taxes separately even though we’re a family. Most importantly, when I went into the hospital for a c-section, we were counting on the hospital itself to allow my wife in for the operation, even though legally she wasn’t allowed."

I am living proof that it is possible to have the queer family of your dreams, even when you come from a homophobic place. I live in a red state, I’m married to another lady, and we have the most perfect baby in the universe. No seriously, he’s the best (unless you also have a baby, in which case

Gay Pride and Prejudice in Dominican Republic

"Mr. Brewster and Mr. Satawake say the support they have received from ordinary Dominicans far outweighs the insults. “I’ve been called a faggot since the third grade,” Mr. Satawake said. “I know how important it is to protect those who can’t protect themselves.”
Recently, a young Dominican man shyly approached Mr. Brewster in public and handed him a card that said: “I have no words to thank you for being here and give me and my lover hope to fight and stay together.”

An openly gay ambassador and his husband have galvanized a fledgling gay rights movement, outraging church leaders in a conservative nation.

El Canto Del Colibri a Documentary

Follks, from our team, we want to thank @Marco Castro-Bojorquez
and his team for this documentary. A must watch.

“El Canto del Colibrí,” is a story of Latino fathers dealing with issues of immigration, faith, marriage equality, machismo, culture, and the process of their LGBTQ children coming out. Responding to requests from “Tres Gotas de Agua” audiences around the world, the filmmakers are taking this journey by inviting Latino men to speak frankly about delicate and deeply personal topics. This film will address political issues about LGBTQ families, social oppression, shared responsibility and acceptance of LGBTQ people as members of Latino families."

'Can't have series A and B kids' says Renzi - English

"Under current Italian law, the children of gay parents risk ending up in foster care if one of their parents dies, because the surviving parent has no legal custody rights over them. The stepchild adoption clause to the civil unions bill would ensure they remain in the same family if orphaned, as the children of straight married parents can."

Italian Senate Approves Civil Unions for Gay Couples, but Not Adoptions

A step forward but not enough, the bill stopped short of granting same-sex parents the right to adopt a child, even if one of the partners is the biological parent.

The bill passed handily once a provision allowing same-sex couples to adopt stepchildren was cut; gay rights advocates condemned the move.

Two Dads Adopt Their Seventh Child, a Gay Teen

"Right from the start of their relationship, Eric Charles-Gallo and Louis Gallo of Kansas City, Missouri, knew they wanted to be dads. The couple is now in the process of adopting yet another foster child, 16-year-old Darnell. And while the teen doesn’t have any of the health challenges faced by his soon-to-be siblings, he is struggling with an issue that his new dads are uniquely qualified to support him through: being gay."

Despite historic 2015, Alabama's LGBT community still far from full equality

Even with marriage equality the law of the land, the battle for LGBT rights at the state level continues to be a story of successes and setbacks," Griffin said. "Though a number of states are expanding access to non-discrimination protections for LGBT people and their families, a majority of states are still struggling to reach even a basic level of equality for LGBT people."

A report released this week documents 2015 legislation that affected the LGBT community and looks ahead to the legislative challenges that 2016 could bring.

Gay Marriage 2016: Italy’s Civil Union Law Could Help Its Struggling Economy

"Camilla Seibezzi, like many parents, picks her daughter up after school, often taking her to swim at the local pool when it’s warm. Unlike other parents, however, Seibezzi, 50, needs a legal document saying she is an authorized caregiver in order to take her daughter just about anywhere.“If the baby is going to the hospital, I have no right to visit her ... If I go to pick up my daughter at school, I need a paper,” she explained Tuesday. That’s because the Italian resident, LGBT activist and former Venice City Council member is not the biological parent of the daughter she helped raise with her former partner. Under Italian law, gay parents are not allowed to adopt the biological child of their partner."

Meeting the unique health-care needs of LGBTQ people - The Lancet

Long overdue changes in the US stance toward conversion therapy.......

"On the basis of research from the American Psychological Association and behavioral health experts, from the beginning of 2016 the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration will communicate to health-care providers that conversion therapy is not an appropriate mental health treatment. Instead, the report emphasizes that sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression of young LGBTQ people should be affirmed and supported".

Reported in this Lancet editorial summarizing the progress in 2015 on health-care for LGBT people: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/S0140-6736(16)00013-1
