Hi All,

Hope you're enjoying the weather as we head into summer! On that note, I wanted to remind you that if you'd like your block to host a block party this summer, you should apply now. If you need help with the application process, I'm happy to join you to collect signatures from your neighbors. You'll need 50% of them to sign off in order to move forward.

I also want to make you aware of a few updates from the city. This year there will be a $15 price increase per vehicle sticker. I voted against this increase, which includes a restructuring that reduces costs for households with 4 or more vehicles. I don't believe it's fair to spread the cost of households that use significantly more parking spots onto everyone else. That said, be sure to take advantage of the available discount periods:

May 15 to May 31: 15% Early Bird Discount (online and mail-in only; automatically applied; not available in person)

June 1 to June 30: 10% discount (online and mail-in only; mail must be postmarked by June 20)

This increase comes in light of a near $2 million shortfall, which is the same reason I voted against the senior center proposal last year. As worthwhile as that initiative sounded, we simply aren't in a financial position to add "nice to haves" when those expenditures result in making necessities more expensive for Berwyn residents.
I am also currently looking for candidates for our first alley cleanup of the year! If you believe your alley could use a thorough cleaning, please reach out so we can get a date on the calendar in the near future.

También quiero informarles sobre algunas novedades de la ciudad. Este año habrá un aumento de $15 por calcomanía vehicular. Voté en contra de este aumento, el cual incluye una reestructuración que reduce los costos para los hogares con 4 o más vehículos. No me parece justo que el costo de los hogares que utilizan significativamente más espacios de estacionamiento recaiga sobre todos los demás. Dicho esto, asegúrense de aprovechar los períodos de descuento disponibles:

Last night, the City Council voted to confirm Michael Fellows as Chief of Police. The appointment raises significant concerns about political independence, as Fellows serves as treasurer for several of the mayor’s political PACs and affiliated organizations, creating the appearance that political loyalty is being rewarded with one of the city’s most powerful public safety positions.

This vote follows a pattern of controversial appointments within the administration. In December, Michael Oschner was appointed city attorney despite earning his law degree only three years ago, practicing law part time for roughly two years, and having served as Stickney’s financial director for only two months. Just last year, he also served as Berwyn’s deputy chief of police. His rapid movement from one politically connected position to another raises serious concerns about qualifications and the accumulation of publicly funded pension benefits. He was ultimately given a six-figure salary while effectively learning the role on the job, a cost borne by taxpayers.

Chief Fellows’ appointment raises similar concerns. He has a history of controversy involving allegations of misconduct and excessive force. The city paid more than a quarter of a million dollars to settle lawsuits involving Fellows. In one case, he was accused of holding a man down while a catheter was forcibly inserted to obtain a urine sample. In another, he was indicted in connection with the beating of a man in Forest Park.

Taken together, these decisions reflect an administration increasingly prioritizing political loyalty over experience and independence in key leadership roles. As upper-level positions within city government and the police department become concentrated among political allies, the city risks entering future contract negotiations, including salaries and pension obligations, without the independence and institutional strength residents deserve.

This will lead to a further degradation of basic city services, and the question will continue to plague us of what exactly our rising taxes are getting us. All of this leaves Berwyn ill-prepared for a post-Lovero future, as critical positions continue to be filled based on loyalty and political relationships rather than demonstrated qualifications.

Anoche, el Concejo Municipal votó para confirmar a Michael Fellows como Jefe de Policía. As we begin the new year, I want to share several important updates, upcoming meeting dates, and community events happening in our ward.

WARD MEETINGS – 2026 SCHEDULE
All ward meetings will be held at the Joe Vallez Activity Center. These meetings are an opportunity to ask questions, share concerns, and stay informed about projects happening in our community.

• Saturday, December 5th – Noon–2:00 PM

Our February 25th meeting will be especially important. We will be finalizing the participatory budgeting project options and discussing the timeline for community voting as well as the implementation process for the winning ideas. Your input helps shape how these funds are used, so I strongly encourage everyone to attend.

The Berwyn Police Department will be hosting a Senior Public Safety Workshop focused on scam awareness and prevention.

This workshop will cover common scams, including AI voice-cloning and Medicare fraud, warning signs scammers use to pressure victims, and steps you can take to protect your personal and financial information. Seniors, caregivers, and family members are encouraged to attend and share this information with neighbors who may benefit.

I’m relieved to hear that Pawfficer Romeo is safe, but I am incensed again to learn of yet another scandal involving our city making the news. Once more, it appears to have been covered up by Mayor Lovero until the story leaked out.

One day, I hope to live in a city where mistakes and accidents are acknowledged openly, and where real work is done to ensure they don’t happen again. Unfortunately, today is not that day.

Me alivia saber que Pawfficer Romeo está a salvo, pero nuevamente me indigna enterarme de otro escándalo de nuestra ciudad que aparece en las noticias. Una vez más, parece que fue encubierto por Mayor Lovero hasta que la historia salió a la luz.
