It’s only Tuesday, but the candidates of One BP have been busy thinking about the meaning of “community” this week.

Buffie Faes participated in a Trunk or Treat on Sunday. She met so many families and children in our community and talked with them about the future of our district and ways to build and strengthen a sense of community in our schools.

Sharon Janosik has been the Bethel Park School District representative at the PA School Board Association conference & Delegate Assembly, learning about innovative programming and processes to envelop our students, faculty, families, administration, and board with a strong sense of shared purpose in the best interests of our children.

And Colleen Sokira, in her role with Allegheny County Department of Human Services, has been spreading the word about the upcoming changes to the SNAP program and the food banks available in the region so that no one in our community is left without food.

On November 4th, vote for your neighbors who are always thinking about how to strengthen our shared sense of Community: Buffie Faes, Sharon Janosik, and Colleen Sokira.

Understandably, we have received some questions regarding the local impact of the recent Reductions In Force at the federal Education Department, primarily as this impacts students with disabilities

This situation is still fluid and we are awaiting further clarification at an administrative and judicial level.

It is critical to note that the laws and protections for students with disabilities in both federal and Pennsylvania statutes and regulations have not changed. As of now, there do not appear to be any federal funding changes for IDEA for the current year within Pennsylvania.

It is important to note that the Pennsylvania Department of Education has indicated that they intend to continue to support students with disabilities as required to the greatest extent possible.

Should we be elected to the Bethel Park School District board, we will continue to work towards meeting the needs of students with disabilities as expected through existing laws.

In addition, we are committed to continue the work of improving our services for these students, both because it is the right thing to do and because it is critical to our mission to educate ALL students, regardless of any changes contemplated by the current federal administration.

We are happy to answer any questions you may have either in comments to this post or as Messages to this page.

We extend our deep thanks and appreciation to Dr. Walsh for his service in leading our district toward continuous improvement and offer our best wishes to him in his retirement!

And now we turn toward the next tremendous decision for this board: selecting the next educational leader for Bethel Park.

Buffie Faes, Sharon Janosik, and Colleen Sokira have the experience, perspective, and knowledge to make a decision that moves the community forward to grow and thrive into the future.

📢 Announcement: Bethel Park Superintendent Dr. James Walsh will retire at the end of the 2025–26 school year.

During his five years leading the district, Dr. Walsh has guided major facility upgrades, strengthened academics, expanded STEAM initiatives, and championed student wellness — leaving a lasting impact on our schools and community.

The Board will begin the search for the next Superintendent in the coming months.

We’ve been out in the community at the football game and knocking doors in Wards 1 & 8 this weekend, talking with our neighbors about how important experienced, focused, steady leadership in our school district is for children, families, and the entire community.

2025 Homecoming!!!!

The Bethel Park High School Homecoming Parade will take place today, Friday, October 3rd at 5:30pm. The parade route will close to traffic beginning at 5:00pm. The road closures include West Library Avenue from Ohio Street to Broad Street, Broad Street from West Library Avenue to the BPHS campus, and Black Hawk Drive on the BPHS campus from Broad Street to the stadium parking lot. Side and intersecting streets may be affected by these road closures as well. Everyone wanting to enter the BPHS campus will need to use the Church Road entrance beginning at 5:00pm. There will be no access to the stadium parking lot from 5:45pm until 6:15pm. Cars entering campus between 5:45pm and 6:15pm will have to park in the turf parking lot. All roadways should be reopened by 6:30pm. Please plan accordingly.

If you are participating in the parade PLEASE READ:

Parade Staging:
The entire parade is to stage and line up at St. Val's and nobody should be dropped off or lining up at the municipal building. This is due to the building still being open for business and a concern for safety.
Only vehicles that are in the parade will be permitted into the rear lot of St. Valentine Church.
Anyone who is being dropped off must be dropped off on Ohio Street and walk into the parking lot to meet with their group.

St. Val's Drop Off Directions:
Parents should drop off participants at the rear lot of St. Val's, utilizing Ohio Street. Ohio Street can only be accessed from the South Park Road side of West Library Avenue or North Pennsylvania after 5:00pm. West Library will be completely shut down at Ohio Street, and all traffic will be directed up Ohio Street with no exceptions. North Pennsylvania will be completely shut down at Ohio Street with only residents of North Pennsylvania and the 2700 block of Mesta having limited access.

Parking Options:
Parents who need to park and walk their participant to the parking lot can park at The Jugoslav Club at the corner of North Pennsylvania and Ohio, in the small parking lot at the corner of West Library and Ohio across from the church, or in the PRT Lot at the corner of Brightwood Road and Lytle Road.

Buffie Faes and Sharon Janosik were out meeting neighbors in Ward 8 this afternoon, grabbed a bite at Fresh Fork, and wrapped up the night cheering on The Pride of Bethel Park at the Marching Band Festival!

Congratulations to all of the bands and their boosters—especially Bethel Park and Peters Township, who co-hosted this event!

It was great to talk to so many of our neighbors and we can’t wait to talk to you, too!
