Join us for JERICHO on Friday, September 11th, from 7–8:30PM at NC4 Bethlehem. We’ll spend the evening together in worship with moments of prayer woven throughout the night. In Joshua 6:20, the Israelites were charged to walk around the walls of Jericho, and everyone participated in a joyful noise that brought the walls crashing down. We believe that as we praise and encounter the living God together, we'll see strongholds break.

\\ A Prayer For the New School Year \\

Father,

As a new school year begins, we pray for students, teachers, and parents…

We pray for the weeks of transition and the building of new rhythms.

We pray for academics and strong friendships, for what students will learn through textbooks and through life experience.

We pray for students entering new buildings and teachers starting over in new school or new grades this year to know your peace in an unfamiliar space.

We pray you would strengthen families, even as individual members may go off in different directions through the school year.

We pray you give each student, teacher, and parent wisdom in creating new schedules, a community to encourage them, and heaps of grace with themselves and each other as the new year settles.

We pray that each student, teacher, and parent would show you to those they encounter in classrooms and extracurricular activities this new school year.

Sometimes we have a tendency to compare ourselves by how much time we spend in prayer, as if the amount of time was some kind of "measuring stick". As we read about those in history who spent hours a day in prayer, may our reaction not be comparison, as if we are failing in our own spiritual walk. But may we be inspired and challenged to desire more time in prayer (however long that is), in our own walk with God. What made these people in history so hungry to spend hours a day in prayer? May we hunger and thirst for more of God ourselves.

Archbishop Leighton was so much alone with God that he seemed to be in perpetual meditation. "Prayer and praise were his business and his pleasure," said his biographer.

Bishop Ken was so much with God that his soul was God-enamored. He was with God before the clock struck three every morning.

Bishop Asbury said, "I propose to rise at four o'clock as often as I can and spend two hours in prayer and meditation."

Samuel Rutherford rose at three in the morning to meet God in prayer.

Joseph Alleine, an English clergyman, rose at four o'clock for his business of praying until eight.

"The [people] who have most fully imitated Christ in their character, and have most powerfully affected the world for Him, have been [people] who spent so much time with God as to make it a notable feature of their lives." EM Bounds

Over the next few weeks, we will be inspired by people in our Christian history whose lives were characterized by time in prayer. May we consider how they were able to reorganize their daily schedules and be challenged by their examples to open ourselves to more time in prayer.

John Fletcher, an English clergyman and author. He would sometimes pray all night - always, frequently, and with great earnestness. His whole life was a life of prayer.

Charles Simeon, the English revivalist, devoted the hours from four to eight in the morning to God.

John Wesley spent two hours a day in prayer, beginning at four in the morning.

Martin Luther said, "If I fail to spend two hours in prayer each morning, the devil gets the victory through the day. I have so much business I cannot get on without spending three hours daily in prayer."

William Bramwell is famous in Methodist records for personal holiness, for his wonderful success in preaching, and for the marvelous answers to his prayers. He would pray for hours at a time. He almost lived on his knees. He often spent as much as four hours in a single season of prayer in retirement.

Bishop Andrews spent the greatest part of five hours every day in prayer and devotion.

How can their examples encourage us today to spend more time with God?
