Jan Raynor Music Studio

Jan Raynor Music Studio Piano lessons and general music classes for all ages taught in groups and privately. Piano lessons taught in a group setting gives students incentive to practice!
(3)

We learn theory, keyboard geography and rhythm with games and by playing our pianos. Classes are taught in groups of up to four with students their own age. Recitals are at their regular class time and are fun and casual. Solos are encouraged but not required. I teach private lessons as well. I will also teach general music reading classes to those interested in learning to sight sing. This is open to anyone of any age!

Mission: To help foster an interest in music by using classic methods and ear training and to unlock the "mysteries of harmony" in our general music, piano and vocal classes. My hope is to make music interesting, fun and accessible. Playing a musical instrument and singing is a lifelong learning experience and lifelong joy!

The Christmas season is coming up and some are looking to purchase an instrument for yourself or your student. If you are looking to conserve space a digital keyboard may be the choice for you. The good things about the digital keyboards are they do not take up as much space and your can equip them with headphones for private rehearsal. When looking for digital keyboards there are basically two types, touch sensitive and weighted keys. For your serious student, weighted keys are best. These instruments do weigh more and may be a little more cumbersome to move but are closer to the action and feel of an acoustic piano. If your budget is really tight, touch sensitive keys would work for a beginner, however, upgrading later on should be considered. Recently a student of mine had the good fortune to come across a piano someone was just wanting out of the way. Check Craigslist and Lejeune Yard Sales. You may find one too. Happy Thanksgiving!

As many of you know, my mother passed away on October 17th just shy of her 81st birthday. This was such a shock and we miss her so much. In going through her things we found that she did not have a lot expensive material things but she had the most interesting collection of music which my brother and sisters allowed me to keep. She was a piano teacher and taught since 1976 and up until her passing. The most patient of teachers, she saw potential in all her students and loved them and was so excited when they succeeded. We found the bulletins for her recitals carefully preserved in a notebook in sheet protectors. It was so interesting to see the names of people who participated. At one time there were as many as 40/50 students. Mama never was one to promote herself and was painfully shy. It took everything she had to get up in front of the church and play for the congregation and choir but she had a skill to play piano and to teach others and did so for over 60 years. One of her recital pieces she played when she was young was "Under the Double Eagle". She could still play it the week before she died because I went to see her and heard her practicing! She was useful to God and others and that's the way she wanted it. I miss her so much. I do hope to be able to carry on the tradition of being useful to others and God.
