TIMBER FIRE- Morning Uodate 9/2/26

Timber Fire: 25,322 Acres, 22% Contained and 1,321 Firefighters assigned to the Fire.

The Timber Fire remained quiet overnight as weeks of aggressive firefighting and a change to more favorable weather conditions have helped crews gain ground throughout the area. The fire is sitting at 25,223 acres and 22% containment with the majority of that containment along the Highway 1 corridor. With the moderated fire behavior and strong progress, night operations have been suspended. Crews will remain available 24 hours a day if the need arises and are ready to respond.
Today, firefighters’ primary focus will be along the northwestern edge of the fire near the South Fork of Little Big Sur as crews work to build line directly along the edge of the fire from just east of Post Summit moving east toward Ventana Double Cone.
Fire personnel and Caltrans crews continue to work along Highway 1, actively mopping up any lingering hotspots and clearing fallen rocks in an effort to reopen the road as soon as it is safe to do so.

WEATHER: Humidity fully recovered overnight. Expect levels to drop to around 50% today. A cool pattern will continue through Friday and Saturday, followed by gradual warming. Light west winds expected.

Current Situation:
The Plaskett Fire is currently 28,968 acres and 1% contained, burning east of Plaskett Creek. in southern Monterey County on the Los Padres National Forest. California Interagency Incident Management Team 7, led by Incident Commander Tom Clemo, assumed command of the Plaskett Fire at 7:00 a.m. on September 1. The fire is being managed with a full suppression strategy. The Team is working closely with the Los Padres National Forest, Fort Hunter Liggett, cooperating agencies, and firefighters on the ground to build on the progress already made while maintaining a strong focus on firefighter and public safety.

Firefighters made good progress during last night’s shift across much of the fire perimeter. Existing lines are holding in the Northern portion of the fire, and moderating weather conditions are allowing crews to implement direct suppression tactics where terrain and conditions allow. The Eastern portion of the fire remains the primary area of concern. This area has not experienced significant fire in more than 50 years, creating challenging conditions for firefighters. Firefighters will continue evaluating opportunities to safely access this area and construct viable containment lines to reduce the potential for additional fire spread.

Today, firefighters will continue working to build on yesterday’s progress, with resources concentrated in areas offering the best opportunities for direct containment. Crews will also maintain structure protection and reinforce contingency lines should conditions change. Highway 1 remains closed through the affected area, and evacuation orders and warnings remain in effect in portions of Monterey and San Luis Obispo counties.

Incident Update Tuesday, September 1, 2026 — 6:30 AM



The Timber Fire has burned 25,190 acres and is 22% contained. Fire behavior moderated during the previous operational period. Crews continue strengthening established control lines and actively mopping up along the Highway 1 corridor, while suppression repair work continues from Pfeiffer Camp south. Resources are also connecting completed dozer line around other portions of the incident to help minimize inland spread.

Cooler temperatures and increased humidity are expected today, with west winds gusting up to approximately 15 mph along exposed ridges. Evacuation Orders, Warnings, and Shelter-in-Place Orders remain in effect. The incident is being managed by California Interagency Incident Management Team 3 (CIIMT 3).



The Plaskett Fire has burned 27,580 acres and remains at 1% containment. The fire continued aggressive growth during the previous operational period, primarily along the eastern perimeter as it pushes into Fort Hunter Liggett. Steep terrain and heavy fuels continue to drive fire behavior.

Crews made progress along the northern edge, using firing operations along the Slick Rock road system, while aviation resources supported suppression efforts along the southern edge near Los B***os Road. Structure defense remains a primary operational priority, and crews are working to hold the fire within the Willow Creek drainage to the south.

Evacuation Orders and Warnings remain in effect in Monterey County. In San Luis Obispo County, zones SLC-001, SLC-002, and SLC-003 remain under Evacuation Warnings. CIIMT 3 is also managing this incident.

Highway 1 Closure

Highway 1 remains closed from mile marker 56 (south of the Little Sur River) on the north end to mile marker 0.09 (just north of the San Luis Obispo County line) on the south end. No estimated time for reopening has been provided.

Timber Fire: 25,190 Acres, 22% contained and 2,016 firefighters assigned.

Firefighters on the Timber Fire were aided by overnight humidity recovery near 90% which helped keep fire behavior moderated.

Night crews focused on mop up and active patrol along the Highway 1 corridor, specifically working to extinguish any lingering heat that could threaten the road or structures in the Camp Pfiefer area. To the east, humidity remained as low as 5% at elevations around Chews Ridge and highlights the potential for continued fire spread as conditions allow.

With that potential in mind, firefighters along the northwest corner of the perimeter are focusing on building containment around a slopover from several days ago near Manuel Peak.

Along the northern and eastern edges of the fire, handcrews and heavy equipment are being utilized to connect pieces of completed dozer line from Bixby Mopuntain to Skinner Ridge, east toward Haystack and from Chews Ridge east then south toward Arroyo Seco.

WEATHER: An early season trough of low pressure will bring unseasonably cool temperatures and higher humidity airmass over the Timber and Plaskett Fire tomorrow. This will be one of the coolest days since the fire started with highs mainly in the 60s and struggling to warm into the 70s, even for interior portions of the fire. General winds will continue to be onshore and from the West with gusts to around 15 mph for the exposed ridges along the Coast Ridge Trail. Lower elevations below 2000 feet will continue to see good humidity values that will help with mop-up operations. The air aloft should be cool enough to erode the marine inversion layer with cooler temperatures for the highest elevations above 3000 feet. Skies will be partly cloudy tonight as a weak frontal boundary passes through. The front may generate some very light showers or drizzle overnight into Wednesday morning, especially around Big Sur and the Pfeiffer Camp but amounts would be a few hundredths at most.

Plaskett Fire: 26,734 Acres, 1% Contained and 955 firefighters assigned.

Fire behavior on the Plaskett moderated overnight as humidity recovery approached 90% and temperatures dropped into the 50s. The fire exhibited aggressive growth Monday, growing to 26,734 acres. Crews were able to make great progress on the western edge utilizing firing operations along dozer line from the Gorda/Pacific Valley area north to Prewitt Ridge Campground. By strategically applying fire along completed containment lines, firefighters are able to remove unburned fuel from the advancing fire front which helps reduce fire intensity and increase the odds for successful containment.

Along the southern edge of the fire near the Los B***os Road, crews also implemented strategic firing operations where necessary to help protect structures. The fire has crossed Los B***os and is established in the Alder Creek drainage where crews are working to take as direct of an attack as possible and identify opportunities to build indirect lines where needed.

To the east, the fire made minimal movements compared to daytime activity and crews were patrolling throughout the night to ensure the fire stayed within existing lines and road systems.

Timber and Plaskett Fires Evening Update for August 31, 2026

Timber Fire: 25,190 Acres, 22% contained and 2,016 firefighters assigned.

The Timber Fire saw more moderated fire behavior and is currently 25,190 acres with 22% containment.

Firefighters worked to strengthen existing control lines and actively mop up along the Highway 1 corridor as well as suppression repair activities from Pfiefer Camp south.

Resources are connecting completed dozer line in all other areas of the fire to minimize the inland spread as much as possible. While temperatures will drop, it will remain relatively dry with no significant precipitation in the forecast and humidities in the 30 to 35% range.

Plaskett Fire: 26,734 Acres, 1% Contained and 955 firefighters assigned.

The Plaskett Fire showed continued aggressive growth throughout the day today and now sits at 26,734 acres and 1% contained.

The growth was primarily along the eastern perimeter as the fire continues to push deeper into Fort Hunter Liggett in areas that have not seen fire in more than 50 years. Steep terrain and thick fuels remain the primary driver of fire behavior.

Crews made great progress along the northern edge of the Plaskett using strategic firing operations to help check the fire’s progress along the Slick Rock road system from San Miguel Creek east to Slickrock Creek.

Aerial resources were in heavy use along the southern edge to help slow the fire’s progress along Los B***os Road as firefighters continued structure defense operations.
Tonight’s operations will be a continuation of structure defense and protection measures with plans in place to hold the fire in the Willow Creek drainage to the south.

TIMBER and PLASKETT FIRE Morning Update- Monday, August 31,2026

Timber Fire: 24,970 Acres, 21% contained and 2,334 firefighters assigned.

The Timber Fire remains active with moderate growth. Night shift crews worked to reinforce control lines and keep the fire in current containment lines.

Today’s priorities will be to contain the slop-over at Juan Higuera Creek north of Manuel Peak and connecting pieces of completed dozer and handline north toward Skinner Ridge and East toward Chews Ridge. Mop up and active patrolling continues along Highway 1 and communities along Big Sur.

Plaskett Fire: 15,478 Acres, 1% Contained and 897 firefighters assigned.

Crews worked aggressively throughout the night as the Plaskett Fire nearly doubled in size in the past 24 hours because of steady winds and thick vegetation with no fire history in the past 50 years.

The fire grew on all fronts, pushing north toward Prewitt Creek where firefighters worked stay ahead of the advancing front and conduct tactical firing operations from near San Miguel Creek along Prewitt Loop. Dozer line is in place to the north.

The fire pushed east onto Fort Hunter Liggett, near Anthony Creek and is more than a mile past South Coast Road.

Along the southern edge, crews conducted firing operations and implemented structure protection measures along Los B***o Road as the fire moved into Alder Creek.

The western edge of the fire backed downhill toward Highway 1 in the Pacific Valley/Sand Dollar Beach area.

Today’s efforts will continue to focus on structure protection and firing operations as conditions allow while seeking opportunity to go as direct as possible along the fire’s edge.

WEATHER:
Timber Fire location, winds will continue coming from the west, keeping humidity higher, especially below 2000 feet near Big Sur Village. Areas above 2000 feet will finally see some improvement, with humidity rising compared to recent days. Overall winds will stay onshore, with gusts up to 15 mph on the ridgetops, while lower slope winds will stay light at under 8 mph. Inland skies will be sunny, and coastal clouds will linger along the immediate shoreline this morning
