March 15-17, 2026 marks the 107th birthday of The American Legion. "Since 1919, The American Legion has led the charge for veterans health care and rehabilitation, patriotic youth programs, a strong national defense, and Americanism." The American Legion essentially created what is now the VA & US Dept of Veteran Affairs. They drafted a bill that became the GI Bill of Rights and then, after the Global War on Terrorism, expanded those rights. They've lasted over a century because while they support our veterans, they also focus on supporting & educating our youth through baseball, shooting sports, oratorical contests, etc. I highly recommend reading this speech from The American Legion Headquarters; it gives a wonderful synopsis of why this organization should be celebrated. And our Auxiliary celebrated by presenting our veterans some birthday cupcakes at their monthly meeting last night. 🥳🧁
