🩸 Join the Conversation on Sickle Cell Disease

Sickle cell disease is the most common inherited blood disorder in the United States, affecting approximately 100,000 Americans. The disease can cause severe pain, organ damage, and other life-threatening complications, making access to compatible blood transfusions essential for sickle cell fighters.

September marks Sickle Cell Awareness Month, in recognition Senator April N.M. Baskin and the American Red Cross of Western New York invite you to attend a community panel discussion featuring healthcare professionals, advocates, and community leaders who will discuss sickle cell disease, support resources for patients and families, and the critical role blood donors play in saving lives.

The American Red Cross and partners are working around the clock to help those affected by the devastating wildfires that continue to burn in and around Spokane, Washington, where as many as 65,000 people have had to evacuate and more than 700 structures have been destroyed.

Red Crossers from across the country, including Wanda Martinez-Johncox from the Greater Rochester chapter continue to deploy to support disaster relief efforts. Wanda is helping to support sheltering efforts, providing evacuees with a safe place to stay, food to eat and emotional support during this challenging time.

Over the past several months, more than 670 Red Crossers like Wanda provided help and hope to those impacted by wildfires.

You can help people affected by disasters like fires, floods and countless other crises by making a donation to Red Cross Disaster Relief.

Last month, we were proud to recognize four extraordinary individuals whose courage in the face of an emergency helped to save the life of another.

When an individual went into cardiac arrest at the Town of Tonawanda Aquatic and Fitness Center in January - Sam Baxter, Liam Burgerson, Nolan DeJesus and Miranda DeCourcey didn't hesitate. These co-workers with the Town of Tonawanda made the conscious effort to not only learn how to respond to emergencies - but to act, ultimately saving the life of another.

Their ability to handle the situation appropriately, reflects their highest degree of concern for another human being who is in distress.

Sam, Liam, Nolan and Miranda are an embodiment of the Red Cross’ mission as they quickly helped prevent and alleviate human suffering during times of crisis and we are grateful for their service. ❤️

Each year, we train more than 6 million people in lifesaving skills nationwide - 50,000 of them right in the Western New York region - to empower them with the tools and confidence to respond when moments matter.

Be the help until help arrives. Get trained: redcross.org/take-a-class

"We're already seeing that some surgeries are being delayed by lack of products." said Dr. Leonard Anderson, chief medical officer at United Health Services. "Some surgeries really can't safely be performed without the availability of blood. Heart surgery being the perfect example."

Blood cannot be stockpiled and volunteer donors willing to roll up a sleeve are the only source.

Blood and platelet donors are needed immediately to help ensure a readily available blood supply for patients this summer.

Thank you to FOX 40 News WICZ-TV for highlighting the lifesaving impact of blood donation.

Southern Tier health officials are urging eligible residents to donate blood as the American Red Cross faces only the second national blood crisis in its 145 year history.
