ICYMI: The City has secured $2.4 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Justice to fortify our commitment to re-entry and public safety initiatives.

This funding will empower us to achieve three vital goals: expanding services for our youth through the RESTORE pilot, engaging in community-informed planning for ages 11 to 15, and enhancing our public safety agenda with a strategic plan for youth crime reduction, equitable justice policies, and evidence-based programming.

Together, let’s build a safer and more inclusive Birmingham for all.

Have you heard of Connect Birmingham?

It’s a new initiative to enhance community safety.

The program allows residents to register their private security and doorbell cameras with the police department, providing valuable resources in times of need.

Your cameras can be the key to solving crimes and making our neighborhoods safer.

Let’s come together, register our cameras, and strengthen the bonds of community safety.

Make sure you’re keeping an eye on them as holiday vacation starts!

Apps like Life360 lets you be in the know about their location and allows for peace of mind plus you can make the best judgment on where they go and how long they stay.

"We are not able to police ourselves out of this situation," Tate added. "It is incumbent upon every single person in this city to stand up and do something about this. If you see something, say something. If someone you know needs help, reach out."

The violence in this city cannot continue.

D9, Councilor Smitherman said she will have more folks at this event and we cannot let that happen. Make sure you bring your lawn chair and get prepared for a night to remember!

No matter which district brings in more attendees, the true winner here is the city itself! Let's celebrate this unity and collaboration. Save the date for October 8th at 5 pm and stay updated at safesummerseries.com.

See ya there!

Today, we remember the lives of Addie Mae Collins, Carole Robertson, Cynthia Wesley, and Carole Denise McNair, forever etched in our hearts.

In honor of the 60th anniversary of the 16th Street Baptist church bombing here in Birmingham, we join together today to commemorate this tragic event and remember the legacy of those four little girls, which lives on.

I also want to take this time to remember Virgil Ware and Johnnie Robertson, who lost their lives just hours later on this very same day in history.

I had the opportunity to meet with a special group of young men and women this morning. The Youth & Peace in Action Ambassadors are working to create a positive impact on our communities. When the youth speak, it is very important to listen.

Each of these students were selected for this ambassador role. They went through training, created maps of community harm (violence) and healing (peace), and developed recommendations to share with civic leaders.

It's so awesome to see the next generation of leaders being proactive! If you want to learn more or get involved, head over to their social media platforms!
