LIVE AIRBORNE CULTURE AND UNDERSTAND THE LEGACY

Today we celebrate our 105th birthday of our Division! On 25 August, 1917, the 82nd Division was assembled at Camp Gordon, Georgia. The Division would distinguish itself during action in the First World War. On 15 August, 1942, the Division was redesignated as our Nation’s first Airborne Division. The legacy continues today as the modern Paratrooper carries the torch of the past into the future, living the airborne culture and honoring those who came before us. From the Meuse-Argonne to the Drop Zones of Europe. The Dominican Republic and Vietnam, to the airfields of Grenada and Panama. Within the deserts of Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan, to the training areas of Poland. Our Division’s history continues to be written, each chapter continuing to highlight our proud legacy and storied traditions. Happy Birthday to the All Americans, past, present and future.

On June 6, 1944, more than 160,000 Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of heavily-fortified French coastline, to fight N**i Germany on the beaches of Normandy, France. Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower called the operation a crusade in which, “we will accept nothing less than full victory.” More than 5,000 Ships and 13,000 aircraft supported the D-Day invasion, and by day’s end, the Allies gained a foot-hold in Continental Europe. The cost in lives on D-Day was high. More than 9,000 Allied Soldiers were killed or wounded, but their sacrifice allowed more than 100,000 Soldiers to begin the slow, hard slog across Europe, to defeat Adolf Hitler’s crack troops.

06/03/2022

The 82nd Airborne Division supported commemorations across Normandy to recognize the deeds and sacrifices of the men who fought to liberate France starting on June 6, 1944. First, Chaplain (MAJ) Michael Krog, 1BCT chaplain, spoke at the unveiling of a new stained glass in the Caquigny Church dedicated to Chaplain (CPT) Ignatius Maternowski in Amfreville. Maternowski was a Franciscan Friar with the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment and after jumping in near Picauville, he set up a makeshift aid station in Gueutteville between the Germans and Americans. Taking off his helmet and carrying a white flag to a German aid station to look for a doctor, Maternowski made an agreement with the Germans to combine aid stations to support the care of Soldiers on both sides. During a return trip to the American aid station, Maternowski was shot and killed by a German sniper.

MG Chris LaNeve, commanding general of the 82nd Airborne Division, and CSM David Pitt represented the division at the Three Cemeteries monument. They laid a wreath at the monument which represents the three temporary cemeteries established in Normandy prior to the American Cemetery in Collevillle Sur Mer. Each step in the monument represents the 48 states that comprised the United States at the time, and the flame at its top symbolizes eternal memory of those who gave their lives in service to France.

82nd Airborne Paratroopers were joined by German Soldiers to honor Alexandre Renaud, a French ally to U.S. troops on D-Day. Renaud, the town pharmacist, assumed duties as mayor just two weeks before the invasion. He led his town through its darkest day, and continued to honor those who served and died for the people of France. MG LaNeve later spoke at the commemoration for all Allied airborne units that took part in Operation Overlord at the Airborne Spirit Monument. Dedicated in 2014, it pays homage to those men killed and wounded in each of the Allied forces during the operation to secure a foothold on the European continent.

The Division’s All American Chorus performed at the Eternal Heroes Monument as well. World War II Veterans and representatives of the 82nd Airborne Division and 101st Airborne Division’s (Air Assault) came to honor fallen Paratroopers who liberated Ravenoville in June of 1944.
