September is recognized as Sickle Cell Awareness Month. Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited blood disorder in which red blood cells may become sickle-shaped and hardened. About 1-in-13 African Americans carry the sickle cell trait and many do not know they have it. People of many ethnic backgrounds can have SCD, including Latinos, who have the second most common incidence of SCD in the US.
You can support Sickle Cell Awareness Month by spreading awareness on SCD and sporting a red ribbon!

Additionally, Birmingham achieved MEI “All-Star” status for its perfect score, despite Alabama’s status as a state without non-discrimination statutes that expressly protect LGBTQ people.
