May 17th is the 69th Anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education, the Supreme Court ruling that outlawed racial segregation in public schools. In honor of this Civil Rights victory, the Division of Social Justice & Racial Equity is hosting a conversation with Dr. Tondra Loder-Jackson on the legacy of Brown v. Board and the importance of diversity in academia.
Dr. Loder-Jackson is a distinguished Birmingham Southern College alum and professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in the School of Education, the African American Studies Program, and the Department of History.
You don’t want to miss this! Tune in to the stream on Facebook at 7PM on Wednesday, May 17th. Be sure to follow the SJRE team on all social media platforms.
Over the weekend, the Social Justice & Racial Equity team joined one of many local non-profits, Empowered Citizens of Birmingham, for a community cleanup of the Germania Park Community in District 7. We were able to collect over 50 gallons of trash!
Community beautification is an important factor of community health, and with pollution being such a huge issue, it was important for the SJRE team to connect with a local organization committed to combatting environmental injustice.
If you’re looking to improve your local community, don’t be afraid to get involved with Birmingham-based grassroots organizations! Thanks for having us, Empowered Citizens of Birmingham
We owe our progress today to those that came before us. It was their sacrifice, courage, and determination that paved the way for future generations. The Children’s Crusade changed everything. We are thankful for our foot soldiers ✊🏾 #SJRE #CivilRights #ChildrensMarch #ChildrensCrusade #BlackHistory #USHistory
