Allysa Rapadas – 2020 Employee of the Year - Firehouse Ministries

Alyssa visited Firehouse 6 years ago when she was in the YLF class her junior year in high school. She visited as part of the nonprofit site visits we do on Human Services day. Her visit led to an internship and she now works there part time while finishing up school at Alabama. Proud of you, Alyssa!

Each year the Firehouse celebrates our stellar staff by naming a select few Employees of the Year. In a year like no other, all of the Firehouse workers poured themselves into our guests day after day, serving in more ways than any job description could capture. We couldn't let October pass us by without another ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT! Derrick Billups is the Director of Education for the Woodlawn Foundation. He received his BS from the University of Alabama, his Masters in Education from UAB, and his Masters in Divinity from Samford. Prior to joining Woodlawn Foundation, he was a teacher in Birmingham, Jefferson County, and Hoover City Schools. Derrick had a lot to say about his time with YLF. Read his full statement below! #ylfalumni

"My selection as a sophomore student from Woodlawn High School to participate in Youth Leadership Forum remains one of my highest and most honored of achievements! YLF has played an integral role in shaping my philosophical approach relative to my work in facilitating the successful implementation and sustainability of community development models in Birmingham. The levels of exposure and access to well-respected and informed leadership from Birmingham, representing a myriad of career fields, served to enlighten me concerning the various complexities and challenges facing the city and particularly underserved communities. The topics presented and conversations initiated by YLF staff, guests speakers and students broadened my knowledge and deepened my understanding concerning the importance of convening broad and diverse coalitions to help deliver critical solutions to longstanding community issues. The experiences gained from the interactions with my class mates continues to encourage and inform my current activism and engagement with the community at large. The scope of my leadership abilities as an adult was unequivocally enhanced by my participation in YLF. It is the realization of this fact, that I am most appreciative of my time as a student participant of Youth Leadership Forum." - Derrick Billups, YLF Class of 1991

#flashblackfriday to a YLF Counselors Luncheon from several years ago. Area school counselors are a key link in our recruitment process. By this time, we are starting to receive over 200 applications from area high school students who want to participate in YLF. Unfortunately, with the health and safety of the students and our community in mind, we have canceled the 2020-2021 program year. We are currently planning some virtual activities that will be open to all students. Stay tuned!!

This years opening retreat will look a little different but we will still do team building and inclusion exercises - just from a safe distance 😊.

This diverse group of 45 students from 30 different schools graduated from YLF in a different way than usual. We had to cancel their Closing Retreat and Graduation but we held a drive-by graduation for them recently and, while it was hot and stuffy in those masks, it was so worth it to see and celebrate these students! 😷🤗#youthleadershipforum #ylfbham #ylfcovidclass

Economic Development & Education day this year was focused on innovation across sectors. From Innovation in primary and secondary academic institutions such as charter schools and design thinking to to innovation in the business sector such as the Ed Farms initiative and the companies at Innovation Depot. The economic development & education group would have shared all that they learned on this day at their graduation ceremony back in April if we had not canceled it due to COVID-19. #ylfbham #youthleadershipforum #ylfecodevday
