Yesterday, Mayor Woodfin made a major announcement on the formation of Birmingham's first Civilian Review Board — an independent and community-led platform for assessing police operations. To the right of the mayor is J.D. Jackson, the cousin of Bonita Carter, a young black woman who was tragically killed by an off-duty Birmingham police officer in 1979. In honor of Bonita Carter's life and others, the Civilian Review Board represents a pivotal step forward as part of the Birmingham Public Safety Task Force's ongoing efforts to strengthen trust, transparency and oversight between residents and the Birmingham Police Department.
