Firehouse Ministries prepared to feed all who are hungry this Thanksgiving

Big thanks to Brittney Decker for coming out to visit! She is one of our towns angels and has served meals with us before! Good people doing good things is what makes our community run.

In a time where many things are uncertain because of the Coronavirus pandemic, Firehouse Ministries in Birmingham wants to be sure those in need of food are fed this holiday season.

The Firehouse wishes a Happy Veteran's Day to all who have bravely served! Did you know that just this year we have served 273 homeless or food insecure Veterans? This is MUCH too high of a number- no service member should have to use our homeless shelter, but if they need us we will be there!

One of our staff member’s family came in today with food and to help serve a special lunch! Today’s treat was Filipino food: pancit (noodles), fried rice, and lumpia (egg rolls).

Firehouse Ministries distributes clothing to homeless men on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 1-3pm! Any man who is in need of fresh clothes can get seasonally appropriate clothing items and we have a limited amount of women's items since we are running a pandemic day shelter for the ladies. This year we have handed out over 6,000 articles of clothing. #WeAreFirehouse 👕

11/06/2020

Edit: Pathways Women's Center is bringing over 30 sack lunches, so the need is met for today. However- this will be a reoccurring need until the pandemic is over.

It’s a beautiful day out and we are in need of some pre-made sack lunches!!

We serve guests who do not stay in our shelter lunches every day and are completely out. If you are able to make any sack lunches to drop off we are ALWAYS needing some but are out of them today! They usually include a bottle of water, a sandwich, and chips. Even if sandwiches are all that can be dropped off, we are more than thankful and so are our guests.

Please let us know, as any donation helps! You can drop them off in our loading dock at 626 2nd Ave N, Birmingham, AL.

B’ham homeless shelter reports no positive COVID-19 cases during the pandemic

The Firehouse Ministries has been working hard to ensure a safe environment within the shelter. We have wonderful staff to ensure best practices are being enforced as well as a wonderful community that have provided resources to make testing and cleaning protocols possible. Check out this article by WBRC to catch a glimpse of how the Firehouse has handled and adjusted to the COVID-19 pandemic. https://www.wbrc.com/2020/10/14/bham-homeless-shelter-reports-no-positive-covid-cases-during-pandemic/

Social worker Anne Rygiel said the shelter not having any positive COVID-19 cases was not by luck, but due to methodical practices from quarantine to testing and social responsibility.

🍁🍂 Happy Tuesday 🍂🍁

What’s the talk of the town?
➡️To celebrate the first few days of fall + bring a fun activity to our guests, we utilized some donated pumpkins for a painting session to decorate the shelter last Thursday! Check out some of the artistic abilities that really shined through and how they have brightened up the environment 🎨 🎃

While basic needs are extremely important, we also try to provide creative outlets for our guests to express themselves and to provide some form of entertainment. We hope to continue to host more creative outlets for our guests at The Firehouse!

Let us know what you think!

Firehouse has provided services to the homeless community 24/7 since 1983. No tornado, ice storm, lack of utility, or global pandemic has stopped us- we have one mission, and that is to provide shelter and services to those in need. This year has been tough. Both of our fundraisers have been cancelled, and we are increasing services every day. Imagine our dismay when at 5:30am this man threw a rock through our beautiful 2nd Ave. window, startling several of our guests that already suffer from PTSD.
If you know this guy, please let us know. If you want to donate to help us replace the window, please visit us online at www.firehouseshelter.com

In the past 10 days The Firehouse served over 620 meals! Our numbers are climbing, but July is historically one of the lowest donation months, even before the pandemic. We REALLY need help feeding our homeless community- we provide food, showers, clothing to the whole community, not only our overnight guests. If you are interested in dropping off lunch or dinner PLEASE call Kelly at 205-417-2502. We only have five groups signed up for this month. If you are interested in purchasing items that our kitchen needs, please see the picture of Ms. D's list. We also need trash bags, laundry detergent, and cleaning supplies. THANK YOU!

Check out this awesome shout out to Dena Dickerson, one of the hardest working people out there. In addition to working at The Firehouse serving the homeless, she passionately serves those that have been previously incarcerated through OAA. Congrats and thank you for your hard work, Dena. We love you!

Today's #localhero is Dena Dickerson of B'ham, AL, who serves as the Program Director for Offenders Alumni Association. During COVID-19, Dena has provided essential resources to former offenders & their families, building community to reduce crime & recidivism. Thank you, Dena!

Firehouse is at capacity with a waitlist... we are filled with gentleman who are healthy, happy, and safe! A large percentage of guests staying at our shelter are dads and Ms. D, our fantastic kitchen coordinator, wants to celebrate them with a special meal for Father's Day. If you can donate an item on the list, please drop it off at our shelter by Friday. Our address is 626 2nd Avenue North. If you pull in the alley we will come to the car and get it! Also, we always need cases of bottled water. It is HOT outside! Thank you for your support!

Firehouse has gotten a couple of calls asking if we have shut down- we have not! Currently, we are at full capacity (allowing for social distancing/COVID precautions) but are taking new intakes that are COVID negative. If someone has not had a test, we are helping them get one. We are feeding and doing day shelter, allowing people to come into the building to take showers and wash their clothes five at a time... including increased services for women.
Firehouse is working hard to keep our homeless neighbors safe, and part of that commitment is supporting a safe place for advocacy and expression and a fundamental belief that black lives matter! We hope everyone stays safe. God bless you all.

Statement from the Executive Director:
Last night at approximately 3:30 am, there was a stabbing that involved two guests at the emergency shelter. The perpetrator was immediately apprehended by the Birmingham PD. The event that transpired last night is a tragic reminder that accessible mental health care is paramount and we must work together to end the violence that claims so many lives in our community and across the country. The Firehouse is working to support our guests and staff through this very difficult time and welcomes all prayers and support as we mourn the loss of a valued member of our family.

05/06/2020

Are you homeless and need help? Please read our updated service policies!

Effective May 1st

- Lunch will continue to be served outside and guests needing clothing and/or take a shower will wait outside during lunch. No persons who are sick or coughing can enter the shelter.

-Clothes Closet

-Showers
Guests will be allowed to come inside and take a shower, 5 at a time. You are to shower, use the facilities, then immediately exit the building, supervised by staff from beginning to end. Always keep your belongings with you.

Inclement Weather
NO MORE than 10 people can come in from the outside and are to remain in the dining room. Current shelter guests are not allowed in the dining room while outside guests are in the building. Out side guests can use the restrooms in the lobby.
**If you would like to become an overnight guest, you need a documented negative COVID screen. We will assist you in accomplishing this. Ask us for assistance!

Congrats on y'all new location!!!
It's hard to look serious perched on an air hockey table, but I am really honored to represent The Firehouse and all the work we, as a team, accomplish on behalf people experiencing homelessness in Birmingham.
Firehouse Shelter gets my applause as a good shelter..I still go in the shelter on over flow I'm not on the team or in an assigned bed but I'm very grateful for the shelter as a SAFE environment , where me and the belongings I carry feel SAFE Everytime I have been there I was treated with respect by everyone at Firehouse..we all got along despite our circumstances.. Firehouse offers a spiritual 12 step program rather than trying a religious approach which is important to me because I'm not religious, I'm spiritual..and I prefer a program that gives one spiritual freedom to believe as they choose...I believe there's no such thing as bad religion and religion does many people great good.. however I prefer a spiritual approach rather than Church service and Bible Study not that theres anything wrong with Church Service and Bible Study .. it's just one thing I like about Firehouse, they allow spiritual freedom, religious freedom... Its a great group of people at Firehouse Shelter

Firehouse Shelter: Can you please post the link to your Amazon wish list? What are the most-needed items on that list right now? Thanks!
I am going to turn in prayer requests to national and international ministries about any and all adversities and hindrances to funding the present and future firehouse ministries to the homeless. The future firehouse needs to be built and operational, but in the meantime the present firehouse does as well. With prayer and perserverance we can see amazing results when it looks bleak and we become weary. Sid Love
The firehouse was a vital help in my life during a Great time of need. They do more than I knew they did. Very wise to invest in this vital ministry.
A big thank you to the Stand-up Program for the donation on Saturday to the glorious firehouse shelter

Hello. My name is Shelia Chughtai. I was told that my brother Stanley Fowler was in your shelter here in Birmingham. I called and left my phone number. I did not know he was here in Birmingham. He just had surgery and had a limb amputated. Need to get in touch with him---very important. Thanks
