Happy Monday! Today we want to introduce everyone to one of our newer staff members, Elise.
Elise came to Firehouse about 3 months ago as our Respite Care Medical Case Manager. Prior to working with us, Elise was a social worker at Birmingham AIDS Outreach, where her work was focused at the Magic City Wellness Center. In fact, Elise credits Karen Musgrove, the Executive Director at BAO as the person who inspired her to seek her degree in social work. She received her undergraduate degree at Montevallo and was part of the 1st cohort to receive Masters degrees from UAB.
The work that Elise does with us here is unique and important in that Firehouse is 1 of only 7 shelters in the country that offers medical respite care. One of Elise’s goals is to complete a PHD program and publish research that proves the need for respite care at every shelter for those experiencing homelessness.
When I asked her what led her to social work, she didn’t skip a beat in answering that giving back brings her joy and fulfillment. She feels that it’s part of her personal code of ethics and duty to help others. Elise is particularly passionate about health issues within the homeless population and LGBTQIA community. Her hobbies outside of work are basketball (she has a great collection of bball tshirts!) and softball. We are so happy to have Elise here at Firehouse!

We are so happy to be able to move safely back into "in person" fundraising events! We have our 4th Annual Shoes & Brews Cornhole Tournament at Cahaba Brewing Company up first on Saturday, 8/7. We still have a need for title sponsors to help us make this event a success. Being a title sponsor is a great way for your business to connect with the community while helping us to continue to serve those in our community that are experiencing homelessness. Here at The Firehouse Shelter, we cannot do what WE do without YOU. We'd like to thank our local community partners that have already donated goods, services and gift certificates for raffle prizes and we can still use more. If you're interested in becoming a title sponsor or donating a raffle prize- please contact our Development Director, Branden at [email protected] she will get you all set up!

We’d like to give a big THANK YOU to @dr.coreyhartman and his amazing staff at @skin.wellness.derm for providing us with some much needed and often overlooked basics for our toiletry closet. Did you know that people experiencing homelessness are at a greater risk for developing diseases and disorders of the skin? For even the most routine medical treatment- such as treating psoriasis or eczema- homelessness makes the provision of care extraordinarily difficult. Thank you 🙏🏽 @dr.coreyhartman for helping.

Happy Pride Month! Firehouse is PROUD to be an inclusive shelter where every single person matters. Did you know that people who identify as LGBTIQ+ make up 20-40% of the homeless population, and experience higher rates of victimization, violence, and discrimination? We believe that every person deserves respect and a safe place to receive emergency shelter and long term housing. We have made it our mission to be a safe haven for people experiencing the trauma of homelessness and will continue to partner with agencies like Birmingham AIDS Outreach to learn how to open our doors even wider so everyone feels at home!

We had such a beautiful day yesterday that we forgot to post pictures! We served around 150 meals to people experiencing homelessness and provided a relaxed, positive, and fun atmosphere while remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice. HUGE thanks to every person who donated, dropped off food, cooked, and helped served. BIG thanks go to our partners at Saw's Soul Kitchen Piggly Wiggly Homewood, and @buffalorock!

Happy Friday, Firehouse Fam! You all may or may not know that one of our priorities here at the shelter is to teach life skills to our guests. To that end- we are looking for a group (a family, Girl/Boy Scout troop, church group, friend group- ANY group!) that would be willing to donate the supplies and build us a raised garden bed. This would also help to supplement our kitchen with fresh produce 🍅 🥬 🥕
We would also happily accept Home Depot or Lowe’s gift cards to purchase the supplies ourselves! Thank you all for everything that you do for our residents- we appreciate you more than you know! 💜

Congrats on y'all new location!!!
It's hard to look serious perched on an air hockey table, but I am really honored to represent The Firehouse and all the work we, as a team, accomplish on behalf people experiencing homelessness in Birmingham.
Firehouse Shelter gets my applause as a good shelter..I still go in the shelter on over flow I'm not on the team or in an assigned bed but I'm very grateful for the shelter as a SAFE environment , where me and the belongings I carry feel SAFE Everytime I have been there I was treated with respect by everyone at Firehouse..we all got along despite our circumstances.. Firehouse offers a spiritual 12 step program rather than trying a religious approach which is important to me because I'm not religious, I'm spiritual..and I prefer a program that gives one spiritual freedom to believe as they choose...I believe there's no such thing as bad religion and religion does many people great good.. however I prefer a spiritual approach rather than Church service and Bible Study not that theres anything wrong with Church Service and Bible Study .. it's just one thing I like about Firehouse, they allow spiritual freedom, religious freedom... Its a great group of people at Firehouse Shelter
The progress of the NEW Firehouse Shelter
Firehouse Shelter: Can you please post the link to your Amazon wish list? What are the most-needed items on that list right now? Thanks!
I am going to turn in prayer requests to national and international ministries about any and all adversities and hindrances to funding the present and future firehouse ministries to the homeless. The future firehouse needs to be built and operational, but in the meantime the present firehouse does as well. With prayer and perserverance we can see amazing results when it looks bleak and we become weary. Sid Love
The firehouse was a vital help in my life during a Great time of need. They do more than I knew they did. Very wise to invest in this vital ministry.
A big thank you to the Stand-up Program for the donation on Saturday to the glorious firehouse shelter
A really big thankyou to the US Air Force 117th division refueling station for the glorious box lunches. Thank you all for your help with the firehouse shelter
What are your plans for providing dinner and what time do you usually serve it?
Hello. My name is Shelia Chughtai. I was told that my brother Stanley Fowler was in your shelter here in Birmingham. I called and left my phone number. I did not know he was here in Birmingham. He just had surgery and had a limb amputated. Need to get in touch with him---very important. Thanks
