Vintage Mardi Gras Invitation. From the Birmingham Archives.

We've gotten lots of questions and emails regarding the possibility of a 2016 Birmingham Mardi Gras parade: Unfortunately The Birmingham Carnival Society is not planning a 2016 Mardi Gras parade. The difficulty of the parade permitting notification process and related requirements and costs have led us to the decision to not organize the parade this year (and last). Most notably the City of Birmingham has ceased providing waivers for the required police escorts and security. Our apologies. If other organizations/individuals organize a Mardi Gras event, parade or otherwise they are welcome to post it on this page.
Happy New Year!

I am very sad to say that we will not be having the Fat Tuesday parade this year. As a two person operation, we both just got to busy with some other projects this fall to work on the parade permit paperwork and all of the administrative headaches that come along with that. We tried to identify a non profit to work with over the summer so that we could grow and find sponserships for the parade but that has been an unsuccessful effort thus far. We will keep trying! If anyone knows of a non profit that might be a good fit we would like to attempt to work with an organization and keep the parade alive- Please let us know if you have any suggestions. In the mean time we are working on the logistics of a New Orleans style walking parade Sat. 9th of Feb. in 5 points or Lakeview if anyone is interested? That way we could possibly bypass needing the permit and can keep the Mardi Gras tradition going.
