Remember this always: Special Education is a noun! It is a service. It is not a place. It is not a child. ❤

Special education is services and supports, it's specially designed instruction, it's access to a free and appropriate public education.

It's not an adjective to describe a student, a room, or a curriculum. IDEA, in it's original design, was a civil rights law, an anti-discrimination law. The line from Brown v Board to IDEA is straight as "separate but not equal" logically applied to students with disabilities as well. Yet, in practice, it's been an uphill battle for equity and belonging.

The widely held misconception that there is delineation between general education and special education - that there are two different educational tracks/curricula - is relentlessly harmful. Special education entitles a student to the supports and services they need to access the general education curriculum. A small percentage of students have more intensive support needs and, potentially a modified curriculum, but that still doesn't make them a "special education student."

Shifting our language to be more precise is essential in combating ableism and destigmatizing disability. Remember, IDEA exists because schools will not educate students with various support needs without a legal obligation. We contribute to deficit narratives and ableist views when we refer to students as "special education students."

If you're engaged in anti-racist, anti-bias work, special education must be included. Much of the worst impacts of racism and bias in our school system manifests in special education. We have to change our language in order to focus on systems of support and/or oppression rather than labeling students themselves.

Instead of "special ed students" (or worse, sped students), we can say students with supports or students receiving services. What words do you use/prefer?

Thank you Toyota USA for featuring Jessica Long in your Super Bowl ad. It means everything! ❤

I showed Myah the Toyota USA super bowl ad this morning featuring Jessica Long and and her face lit up and she said “that girl has crutches like me.” She then crawled over, grabbed her crutches, stood up and said “I want to be like that girl.” For Myah to see someone “like her” means so much more than people realize and on such a huge platform...unbelievable! Aaron and I were so impressed that Toyota used their super bowl ad to feature someone with a disability...amazing and with such an awesome message! Not many companies would do that.
Thank you so, so much Toyota and Jessica Long!

Check it out! Our ECSE students have the invaluable opportunity to learn from Dr. Robin Ennis! She's amazing!

Pandemic forces us to balance home life and work

In the classroom, Associate Professor Robin Ennis, Ph.D., encourages her education students to take time for self-care activities to sustain their well-being — something this mother of triplet boys has to do as she juggles between classroom and remote teaching and home-schooling. "It's good to be a part of the united spirit to support one another during these times," she said. ❤️

Intelligent Teaching
"I believe our only hope for the future is to adopt a new conception of human ecology, one in which we start to reconstitute our concept of the richness in human capacity."
Sir Ken Robinson

The school system we have all been marinated in has left many of us with an interesting take on the nature of intelligence. Few of us are aware that there are many different aspects to human intelligence, and that the traditional education uses-tests-and-measures just a small fraction of the intelligence-potentialities each student is born with.

The cost of a system so ill suited to the biological reality of the human child is great, both to the child who comes to believe they are thick when they are not, and to society which has to find a way to rehabilitate students who leave schooling without having grown their particular set of intelligences.

We are grateful for Justice Ginsburg's lifetime of service to defend the rights of people with disabilities. Her influence and memory will be eternal. ❤️

As the author of the landmark Olmstead v. L.C. decision, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg freed Americans with disabilities from a life of segregation and isolation by affirming the right to live and receive services in the community of their choice. Her opinion also expanded the protections of the Americans with Disabilities Act to people with mental health disabilities.

We thank Justice Ginsburg for her lifetime of service and hope she continues to inspire others to defend the rights of people with disabilities for decades to come.

"Who knew how helpful a bowl of M&Ms could be in helping to explain this important concept in early intervention?!"❤️

As an early intervention provider, my role is not to “fix” a child’s deficits.

My role is to empower parents with strategies to embed into their daily routines and interactions to support their child’s learning and development.

Spending only one hour per week with the child means that I cannot be the primary agent of change. Parents and caregivers are the primary agents of change in a young child’s life.

Most toddlers are awake an average of 12 hours per day, for a total of 84 hours per week.

I know what strategies are being focused on with the child during our one hour session per week; but I am most concerned about what happens the other 83 hours the child is awake in a week.

Using M&Ms as a visual tool, I can share this concept easily with parents. I put 83 M&Ms of one color into a bowl and explain that they represent the 83 hours the child is awake and NOT in my presence. Then I add one M&M of another color to represent the one hour I spend with the child each week.

The early intervention session is for coaching parents on specific strategies to embed into daily routines and interactions with the child. Life is when the child practices and masters new developmental skills.

In other words, learning for the parent/caregiver happens during the session; learning for the child happens between sessions.

Who knew how helpful a bowl of M&Ms could be in helping to explain this important concept in early intervention?!

If you are looking for more tips on coaching, be sure to check out my early intervention handouts that are available on my website.

As we fall back into school, children may have new routines and social norms such as wearing masks and having their temperatures checked. This post provides a variety of resources to help kids understand the importance of masks and temperature checks and tips for teachers and parents to support children with these new norms. Even if school will be virtual for your school or childcare center, these resources will be helpful anytime children must leave the house with a mask.
