It's Noteworthy Wednesday!
Miss Amber at Children's Nest Temple Terrace does an incredible job teaching and reinforcing her students to use of friendship skills. As seen in the photos below, she sets up her sensory center so that students are facing each other which encourages more peer to peer interaction and cooperative play. She also gives shout outs to students throughout the day where they are recognized for demonstrating friendship behaviors like helping peers put on their smock and working together to clean up centers by getting to wear the super friend cape. #PyramidModel

Please share the news about the Special Issue of JECTE! ✔️
We are pleased to announce the new deadline of March 18, 2022, for manuscript submissions to the Special Issue of the Journal of Early Childhood Teacher Education (JECTE) focused on the New Standards in ECSE and inclusion. We determined that the Special Issue would be published later than originally planned, allowing potential authors more time to develop manuscripts.
There has been much interest in this important and timely issue; therefore, we hope this new deadline will encourage everyone to submit!

Check out more great work on the Pyramid Model for Infants and Toddlers! ✔️✔️✔️
Every year, over 4,000 children are suspended from public preschools for challenging behaviors...and that doesn’t include the many children suspended from private preschools.
What can we do to change these numbers? It starts with providing a strong foundation for social-emotional competence in infancy and toddler-hood.
The Pyramid Resources for Infant & Toddler Social-Emotional Development (PRISM) is a professional development package to help infant and toddler educators promote social-emotional development with young children. We help teachers, coaches and families give children the best start possible, from the youngest age possible!

Remember this always: Special Education is a noun! It is a service. It is not a place. It is not a child. ❤
Special education is services and supports, it's specially designed instruction, it's access to a free and appropriate public education.
It's not an adjective to describe a student, a room, or a curriculum. IDEA, in it's original design, was a civil rights law, an anti-discrimination law. The line from Brown v Board to IDEA is straight as "separate but not equal" logically applied to students with disabilities as well. Yet, in practice, it's been an uphill battle for equity and belonging.
The widely held misconception that there is delineation between general education and special education - that there are two different educational tracks/curricula - is relentlessly harmful. Special education entitles a student to the supports and services they need to access the general education curriculum. A small percentage of students have more intensive support needs and, potentially a modified curriculum, but that still doesn't make them a "special education student."
Shifting our language to be more precise is essential in combating ableism and destigmatizing disability. Remember, IDEA exists because schools will not educate students with various support needs without a legal obligation. We contribute to deficit narratives and ableist views when we refer to students as "special education students."
If you're engaged in anti-racist, anti-bias work, special education must be included. Much of the worst impacts of racism and bias in our school system manifests in special education. We have to change our language in order to focus on systems of support and/or oppression rather than labeling students themselves.
Instead of "special ed students" (or worse, sped students), we can say students with supports or students receiving services. What words do you use/prefer?

Thank you Toyota USA for featuring Jessica Long in your Super Bowl ad. It means everything! ❤
I showed Myah the Toyota USA super bowl ad this morning featuring Jessica Long and and her face lit up and she said “that girl has crutches like me.” She then crawled over, grabbed her crutches, stood up and said “I want to be like that girl.” For Myah to see someone “like her” means so much more than people realize and on such a huge platform...unbelievable! Aaron and I were so impressed that Toyota used their super bowl ad to feature someone with a disability...amazing and with such an awesome message! Not many companies would do that.
Thank you so, so much Toyota and Jessica Long!
