Sgt Parnell Guyton is critically ill with Corona Virus. Sgt Guyton works with the University of Alabama - Birmingham Police Department.

We met Sgt Guyton in 2016 when he helped us film several autism training videos. A man with a very big heart.

"His wife is asking for prayers from the community. “Please let everyone know that coronavirus is real, and they must shelter in place,’’ Fekisha Guyton wrote. “As a first responder, he went to work so we could stay safe at home.” - AL dot Com article

Please join IAG in prayer for Sgt Guyton to make a fully recovery.

Today began a two month long training event at Huntsville Police Department(HPD). By the end of February HPD will have all 420 sworn officers trained in autism awareness.

There are a handful of departments in Alabama which made this type of training mandatory with HPD being the largest.

These departments have shown exemplary leadership in serving their community and IAG as well as the autism and developmental disability community are very thankful!

We are also thankful to all the non-profits who have worked alongside these events to grow the sense of awareness in their respective community.

Onward.

Police: dog sniffs out missing three-year-old autistic child in Florida in under 30 minutes

Investigators searched for 2 hours then called out the K9.

K9 located child in less then 30 minutes.

This is why we highly suggest having K9 search crews out as quickly as possible in missing child/person cases. This saved a life.

Is it autism? The line is getting increasingly blurry

Interesting read/study coming from our northern neighbors in Canada. Is the line becoming blurred?

If the current trend in diagnostic practices holds, the definition of autism may get too blurry to be meaningful, a research team finds.

Its a big step forward in awareness, acceptance and safer interactions when total department training happens. Yesterday, IAG completed its final in-service training for the Madison City Police Department. All sworn officers in the department have received Autism and DD training.

IAG would like to thank Chief Jernigan for allowing us to complete this training with all of his officers. His leadership and dedication to the community should be applauded.

IAG would also like to thank all the local self advocates who assisted in our training by sharing your story. Thank you to a local non-profit, Tennessee Valley Unite, for working alongside IAG and making sure all officers have de-escalation kits for their patrol vehicles.

Yesterday was a great start in working with Huntsville Police Department to train all sworn officers in the next several months. Thank you to HPD leadership for seeing this training as vital to policing in their city.

I want to give a big thank you to Jacob Jennings and his mother Christy for assisting with training helping attendees and myself learn effective ways to communicate with Jacob. It is important that we are always willing to learn and add tools to our tool kit to better serve. He was awesome!

Thank you to those working with Tennessee Valley Unite who help support our efforts by supplying all officers with De-Escalation kits.

IAG believes training should have two phases.

Phase 1 - Training first responders how to interact safely and effectively with individuals with Autism and Developmental Disabilities

Phase 2 - Teach community how to interact safely with first responders and giving family members ideas and tools how to keep their loved one safe.

Knowledge begets Safety.

Madison City held such a community training event one day before a first responder training last week.

We are thankful to the wonderful advocates and parents of Tennessee Valley Unite who have been working tirelessly to have much needed Autism and Developmental Disability training in their area.

We have now begun a series of "in-service" trainings with the city of Madison Police Department which will cover all sworn police officers in Madison, AL!

We are grateful the City of Madison PD along with the others agencies(announced at a later date) agreeing and being so hospitable to us. They are setting the example and standard for making sure they are ready for every interaction and striving to keep members of their community safe!

Stay Safe MPD.
