China vows to retaliate after U.S. orders closure of its consulate in Houston

While significant issues exist between the US and China, the growing wedge between the countries created by punitive "cheek tweeking" is not in the long term interest of either country.

"Analysts on both sides say that bilateral relations are at their worst since before 1979, when the United States formally recognized the People’s Republic of China."

The move comes amid steadily worsening relations between the world’s two largest economies.

On July Fourth, 40,000 Americans cheered a new landmark: the Washington Monument

The original 1845 proposal was a 600-foot-high, Egyptian-style obelisk with a nearly flat top. The hollow obelisk would rise from a 100-foot-high rotunda with 30 columns. Inside would be statues of 30 Revolutionary War heroes and the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence. Outside on the roof would be a Godlike statue of Washington standing in a chariot pulled by six horses. The estimated cost ranged up to $1 million (equal to about $30 million now).

On Independence Day in 1848, the long-awaited start of the obelisk's construction was cause for celebration. This Fourth of July, President Trump plans to make it a focal point of fireworks, despite the coronavirus pandemic.

A frightening moment last night on I-59 in Dekalb County as Tommy Tuberville’s campaign bus caught on fire.
Only the driver was on board and escaped unharmed.
The former Auburn coach will be in a runoff with Jeff Sessions a week from next Tuesday to determine who will face Doug Jones in the November election for a U.S. Senate seat.

Who’s your pick?

House passes small business loan Paycheck Protection Program extension by unanimous consent

If you have not reviewed this option for your small business, the program has been extended. The application process is relatively simple, can be done online, and the proceeds may be changed from a loan to a grant if you meet certain qualifications for use of the funds (payroll). I hope this helps more Americans. @gbharris2485

The US House passed an extension of the $660 billion Paycheck Protection Program fewer than 24 hours after the program shut its doors, moving one step closer to reopening the cornerstone small business coronavirus relief effort.

The Republican president who called for racial justice in America after Tulsa massacre

The presidency of Warren Harding is not normally recognized favorably. But today's story in The Washington Post reveals a side of Harding I had not heard before.

"Harding became the first president to go into the Deep South since the Civil War. And in a speech that the city of Birmingham, Ala., thought would help celebrate its semicentennial, he instead veered dramatically.
Before a crowd of 100,000 — blacks and whites separated by a fence — he made a full-throated case for political, economic and educational equality among the races."

Warren G. Harding’s comments about race and equality were remarkable for 1921

Montgomery City Council votes down mask ordinance, sends doctors out in disgust

ALABAMA COVID19 HOTSPOT VOTES AGAINST SELF HELP.

Montgomery, Alabama has failed to address its surging coronavirus infections with a simply mask wearing requirement.

During an open forum, one councilman questioned whether masks and six-foot distancing really helps. They do, the doctors replied. But the councilman was unmoved. "At the end of the day, if an illness or a pandemic comes through we do not throw our constitutional rights out the window," he said.

From the crowd, doctors called for him to visit the hospital sometime.

Instead, the council killed the ordinance after it failed to pass in a 4-4 tie. ... A trio of doctors, who had waited hours to speak, got up and left the chamber in disgust, exclaiming "Unbelievable."

A Jackson Hospital pulmonologist waited hours to describe the dire situation. "Unbelievable!" he said when the ordinance was defeated.

July 14, 2020 Primary Run-Off Election.

The Alabama Republican Primary Run-off Election is July 14. If you are eligible to vote in the runoff election, please make plans to do so. While there has been a great deal of public discussion about voting by mail, absentee voting is and has been available in Alabama for a very long time with a proper basis for the request. The Alabama Secretary of State recently said that concern regarding risk of infection from the coronavirus will be considvered a valid basis for requesting an absentee ballot.

"The spread of the virus, which caused four deaths in Alabama by Friday morning, led Gov. Kay Ivey to move the March 31 primary runoff to July 14, amid concerns about the health of voters and retirees who work at the polls. Secretary of State John Merrill has said the outbreak will be considered a valid excuse for an absentee ballot."

Check Your Voting Registration Status.

Between now and the November 2020 election (or any time), for Alabama residents, check your voting status at https://myinfo.alabamavotes.gov/VoterView/RegistrantSearch.do.

Voters sometimes arrive at the polls only to learn that their name no longer appears on the list of registered voters. This may be because the voter has moved, or his/her polling place has changed, or if the voter has not voted in a long time, the name may have been removed.

This is easy to check and takes very little time. 🇺🇸

As Trump puts partisan spin on federal aid for states, Republicans and Democrats warn of coming financial calamity

"Republican and Democratic governors are warning of financial calamity if Washington doesn’t provide relief, some GOP lawmakers have joined with Democrats to call for a massive aid bill, and budget experts contend that leaving states to fend for themselves will only prolong the nation’s recovery from the economic shock brought on by the pandemic."

It’s the latest attempt by the president to cast a partisan frame around a crisis that has ravaged much of the country with little regard for political affiliation.

Why Joe Biden Might Choose Terri Sewell for Vice President | National Review

Sewell is a “blue dog” who serves as the vice chair of the New Democrat Coalition. She’s a former Wall Street lawyer at Davis, Polk & Wardwell in New York ... and she has shown occasional flashes of moderation on economic issues. ...

That profile would be reassuring to Democratic donors and upscale suburbanites, and in line with Biden’s own preference for pandering to the social-issue left rather than the party’s socialist wing.

The Alabama congresswoman is virtually unknown and wouldn’t excite the progressive base. But as a low-risk pick who fits Biden’s brand, she has a strong case.

The President's opposition to voting by mail is receiving pushback by some Republicans.

Alabama blocked a man from voting because he owed $4

Seems to me we should be more concerned about allowing people - encouraging people - to exercise the most basic right of a democracy than blocking the voting rights of a person attempting to return to our collect citizenry. Alabama isn’t alone among the states blocking post-incarceration voting rights. But the state could draw a positive contrast with its history by changing this to create a more “pro-vote” policy. What do you think?

WASHINGTON has been an interesting place today. Tension is thick and the Senate is voting now to acquit the President on two counts of impeachment. I am not optimistic that a very divided Congress can find common ground on much of anything for a while, but true Americans will keep trying. Pray for our country tonight, ALL of its leaders, and ALL of our citizens. And if you are near an Irish Pub, have a pint of Guinness Coffee Stout. Cheers to all, Trump and Never Trump alike.

Leaders in Washington are not doing right by our farmers.

Farmers around the country are struggling to pay for basics like groceries and electricity as farm bankruptcies rise and farm debt hits a record high.

Calls from farmers in financial crisis to state mediators have soared by 57 percent since 2015. “We’re supposed to be feeding the world, and we can’t even put food on our own table,” said Berkshire, NY's Anne Lee. President Trump’s trade wars have left the couple nearly $200,000 in debt.
