Last week Five Points South actually came to Dublin when the Chairman of our Five Points Alliance toured the Dublin City Centre Business Improvement District with its founding Chairman Basil Good and then met with their current Chief Executive Richard Guiney (pictured below). Dublin City Centre is a vibrant area of pedestrianized streets, public art and sculpture, bike lanes, sidewalk vendors, shops, bars and restaurants with historic Trinity College at its core. (The street at its front gate was closed for last week's Notre Dame vs Navy pep rally prior to the "match" held in the nearby soccer arena). This area has so much in common with Five Points and we learned a lot to bring home to the discussion of our own district's issues. The Dublin BID funds supplemental Clean and Safe services to the shopping and entertainment districts on both the northern and southern sides of the River Liffey just as we are proposing through the creation of a BID in Five Points South. BIDs work - here in Downtown Birmingham, across our country and around the world - and its time our unique historic district stepped up to that next level of commitment to its future.
