Alabama Partners for Clean Air (APCA) is an affiliation of public, private and nonprofit agencies and organizations working to improve air quality in Jefferson and Shelby counties by implementing voluntary projects and programs that reduce emissions from transportation-related sources. APCA's goals are to achieve and maintain compliance with national ambient air quality standards, to protect and improve public health, to minimize the economic impacts on existing businesses, and to maximize the potential for economic growth in the region. APCA and its partners provide the following: Public Outreach and Education: • Educates the general public about the causes of transportation-related air pollution, how it affects their health, and what they actively can do to reduce and eliminate these serious problems. Employer Outreach: • Educates employers about air quality issues related to transportation. • Encourages employees to travel to work by modes other than single-occupant vehicles. Science and Environmental Education: • Administers air quality education in schools. • Educates children about air quality issues of ozone and particle pollution, their health impacts, how pollutants are formed, and how they can be reduced or prevented. Alternative Fuel Projects: • Provides funding for diesel retrofit and alternative fuel infrastructure projects that contribute to air quality improvements. Promotes the use of hybrid vehicles and alternative fuels, including natural gas, ethanol (E85), propane, electricity and biodiesel (B20). Voluntary Vehicle Emissions Testing and Repair Program: • Provides quick, free emissions checks for vehicle owners and assists owners of high pollution emitting vehicles with proper repairs. Air Quality Forecasts: • Provides daily Air Quality Index forecasts for particulate matter year-round and ozone during the warm season. CommuteSmart Rideshare: • Promotes carpooling, vanpooling, transit, teleworking, bike riding and walking as ways to reduce traffic congestion, save commuters money, and reduce air pollution.
