With no internet or setup required, they’re a convenient and fun tool for learning anytime, anywhere.

This project is supported by the Arizona State Library, Archives & Public Records, a division of the Secretary of State, with federal funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

In a partial lunar eclipse, the umbra – the shadow’s darkest part – covers just a fraction of the Moon. The dark bit grows larger, and then recedes, never reaching the totality phase. In a total lunar eclipse, by comparison, the Earth’s full shadow falls across the face of the Moon.
