BPS Indigenous Ed Week Recap

Beginning at Highland Acres, with Ms. Clark & Mrs. Cimarosti- walking students through beadwork, patterns & meanings of Mrs. C's personal regalia.
Afterward, students had an opportunity to code their own patterns and will be designing beautiful bookmarks and artwork by using the coding process.

We then move to Willmoore Elementary with Mr. Donovan who is just about ready to harvest the three sisters garden which was planted with the help of Mr. Loren White & 5th grade teacher Ms. Hoffner & her class this previous Spring!

We then scoot over to Legacy High School where Ms. Suzie's Circle group welcomed a previous student to share in her experience in the National Guard. Students got to learn all about the opportunities that come with this career path.

We then hop back over to Highland Acres Elementary with Mr. Fladeland and his incredible staff and students- learning about the Tipi, getting to set one up with Mrs. Cimarosti, Mr. Chadwick and Mr. Becker!

Ms. Decoteau began her Culture groups at Murphy Elementary school as well! *no photos yet*

We left our week with BHS Boys Circle learning about the sacred medicines and sharing good thoughts, and closing out the week in a good way with Mr. Donovan & MHA Mentor, Ethan!

This week Monday for professional development day the team instructed for Myhre Elementary on the importance of coming together with Culturally Responsive Practices in Schools, sharing not only best practices, but also sharing the CRAIS tool for reflective self and school culturally responsive inventory.

Today we shared the Medicine Wheel teachings & storytime with our Kindergarten friends at Highland Acres and finally,

We had our second week of Culture Circle at Elk Ridge Elementary where students are getting to partake in mindfulness activities, Hidatsa and Dakota/Lakota language beginner learning!

We enjoyed our time with all 4th graders across Bismarck Public Schools, Mandan Public Schools, TJES, and surrounding areas at the annual UTTC Pow-Wow Youth Day!

Every BPS 4th grade class received preparation lessons of Pow-Wow 101, with everything they needed to know, many attended the SIPS event as well, so this was their 2nd special field trip of cultural learning, fun and enjoying time with their teachers and peers!

Thank you once again, Dr. Leander McDonald, Jermaine Bell, Dakota Out Lawz, BPS, UTTC and local dancers, Circles Alliance and Relentless Feather for sharing your knowledge, expertise, stories, songs and time. Thank you, United Tribes Technical College and Amy Dewitt with Theodore Jamerson Elementary for hosting such a fun, energetic and informative event!

Our final Pow-Wow on the Lawn event last week!

Thank you, Century High School for bringing Bismarck Public Schools - Indian Education Programs to CHS for a beautiful time together, celebrating and learning about not only culture, but history as well!

Thank you to administration, teachers, staff and our incredible students for joining us, listening and participating!

Last year's CHS Pow-Wow on the Lawn was impacted by the high winds and rain, so we had to move it indoors. This year- the sky was beautiful, clear and crisp air was enjoyed by all for CHS Pow-Wow on the Lawn!

Thank you to Mr. Jermaine Bell our MC, Mr Londel Sea Boy and Dakota Outlawz drum group, and our talented dancers from BPS, All Nations and even a young relative joining us from Canada!
