Gordon Harvey Award Winner: Anoka Women of Today.
Each year, the Governing Board receives nominations for ACCAP staff, volunteers and community partners that go above and beyond their call of duty. Gordon Harvey was a former board member who exemplified the spirit of volunteerism.
Anoka Women of Today is dedicated to community service, personal growth, and building meaningful connections. In 2021, Pam D. reached out seeking opportunities to connect with seniors in Anoka County, which led to a strong and lasting partnership with ACCAP Senior Programs and the Kinship Program.
Since then, their “Sunshine for Seniors” initiative has provided quarterly care packages to ACCAP clients in the Senior Kinship, Senior Outreach, and Chores & More Programs. Four times each year, members assemble and deliver 30–50 thoughtfully curated packages filled with both practical and uplifting items such as socks, batteries, postage stamps, snacks, and seasonal or holiday-themed surprises. Each package is prepared with care and intention, bringing comfort, joy, and a sense of connection to seniors throughout the community.
Their involvement extends far beyond donations. Members actively participate in ACCAP card-writing events, contribute handmade and personalized holiday cards, and assist with assembling and delivering care packages. Several members, including Ann D. and Teresa H., have become dedicated ACCAP volunteers, adding personal messages and supporting distribution efforts.
Anoka Women of Today members are consistently engaged—often arriving early, staying late, and encouraging others to get involved. Their enthusiasm has helped strengthen volunteer recruitment and deepen community connections.
We are truly grateful for this partnership. Anoka Women of Today embodies the spirit of service through consistent generosity, hands-on involvement, and a genuine commitment to ensuring seniors feel remembered, valued, and supported throughout the year.
